and in English that means...? ; )

if confusion of some users is the key to development, then half of Shadow would have to be eliminated from what i have read, as well as lots of programs on the market! each preference, subpart, option, or program clearly is not for every user, and from my experience almost no matter what you do has an element of user confusion. Shadow is way past the entry level model. onward Jeff, onward. ; )

I think this depends on the dependencies (that sounds weird...)
meaning, you can not mark A.2 done if it is dependent on A.1 and A.1
is not done. If you did, then there is no dependency (A.2 on A.1)
and, yes, A.3 should be generated, since all of its prerequisites are
  met.

Its all in the dependency graph constructed by connecting tasks. The
confusion comes in when tasks are defined as being "partially"
dependent on another task. What this really is, is tasks being
  ill-defined (mathematically). Example:

Task A: Write Unix "filter" set for converting from English to Greek
...(1) define input and output file formats
  ...(2) define English subset
...(3) write English to Esperanto translator filter
...(4) write Esperanto to Greek translator filter

And no I'm not picking on the design decision to use Esperato as an
intermediate "token" language. Rather the fact that the order and
definition of the tasks infers progressions: 1->3, 1->4, and 2->3

It's obvious in this example that (1) needs to be split. (and suddenly
you have two separate projects!) but it's rarely that easy to spot.

I guess I'm just saying I pity you for trying to build project
  dependency into Shadow. ;)

It's not the difficulty of analysing dependencies you should worry
about, its the way in which you can make clear to a user why the
dependency graph he's built is incorrect. Largely a user education
problem rather than a programming one.

I, for one, would *love* a straightforward dependency graph tool. I
just think that you have to stop and consider how many people get a
horribly confused look on their face trying to use MS Project. (and
no, its not just because its buggy as all h*ll).

The problem with this is that the Yahoo!Groups "search archive" command is the
main flaw of the system. All you can do is search for the word in any
message body, and any significant word will come up hundreds of times.

Much more useful would be to search the TITLES of the messages for a word, but
Yahoo!Groups has not implemented that feature, unfortunately...

Hi Jeff & Listers!

I think having a pref setting for Auto-Save (a la Wordsmith - check on/off

occaisional hack/app related reset when working on something, and thus
losing data, it can be really infuriating if you've forgotten to save for a

A global pref for those whose data is super important (needs to survive a

"Save every 5 minutes when unit is on"?

	Thoughts?

Fair comment (pasted below), Jeff, and clearly you are the boss in this, but -

Q1: Would a "completion activates next task" facility be useful?
A1: Without a doubt!

Q2: Will it be complicated, need revision and refinement, and go through
numerous versions?
A2: I'll bet!

Q3: Is it worth taking a crack at it, and seeing how it goes, improving and
refining over time to iron out the wrinkles?
A3: Subject to other priorities, yes

It's the old story: "The best is the enemy of the good" - it's all too easy
to put off doing something that would be "good" because it won't be
"perfect", but that's a shame if we get neither "good" nor "perfect"!!

Still, I realise you have more than enough on your plate already ;-)

((Of course, "The good is the enemy of the best" as well: once something is
good enough for current needs, it can be tempting not to spend time
improving it; but I don't think that applies here!))

So why not just keep that out and look when you are in Shadow, the place where you can filter and add those tags? Just curious on how that addition would be useful to most of us....

I think her reason for wanting this is like mine. With tags, one might remove much of the heirarchy (fewer parents with children). You can use a tag to mark a group of items rather than making them children of a parent. Makes for a flatter list so you can do different things with sorting etc. The way it is now, the heirarchy information placed in the origin stamp may be of limited use if you are using tags to define your projects or sub-projects rather than parents.

(Its always cool when the next release includes stuff that people
are asking for :)

The next update has a "fast dismiss" option; right now it is set
(in testing) to be "next field" grafitti stroke... which is to say a quick
down then quick up stroke. It counts as if you'd hit the checkbox. Its two
strokes (down then up), as opposed to one tap.. but if you're quickly
grafitting I think it helps. Its also hittable from the keyboards (but
they can already just hit OK to do the same thing). If you've got a better
grafitti stroke, let me knkow ASAP :)

I've been trying to decide a good simple GUI for this. None of
that whacky MSProject type stuff.. the small screen makes it very hard.
(though I may build a gantt view module someday). I'm thinking along the
lines of something like the filter editor... go into "Dependancy mode',
and then it just shows a flat view of the list, with a column down the
right. Then let you creat groups (A through Z) and then number the items
inside of the groups (1-99 or whatever). So all the 'A' items are in one
group, and A1 is before A2. But if you have 5 A2's, then all of those must
be done before A3 (or any of the A3's). That coudl work, but woudl be
tedious for you to maintain (change). but it woudl be simpel to UI, and
could allow various things to be done... timeline add-ups etc.

	*shrug*

Sounds like a separate module to me though.. a $5 or $7.50 udpate
to Shadow to get you a whole whack of project management options (ie: Adds
the above UI and a new menu item "Task" to give you reports or this and
thats).

So the question becomes.. what do we need to offer, and how to GUI
it, and then how to support it in the infrasdtructure simply, etc.

In case this has not been changed in the last 6 weeks, I would like
to point out that the universal standard in any software, even in TV
Satellite Receivers, is now "OK" and "Cancel", where "OK" applies any
changed made in the dialog, and "Cancel" exits the dialog without
applying any change.

"Apply" is used to apply the changes WITHOUT exiting the dialog box.

PS Overall it is more helpful to the user to use the common
standards, even if the programmer feels that there is a better
terminology...

And what do you use wen you wish to merely set up somethign,
without applying it? (ie: Such as to edit a filter or view that may not be
applied currently, or is applied to another file?)

Now I think that this column is for "expand and collapse arrows" (since it
moves over when I check " Indent expand and collapse arrows").

I guess the problem is that even though I am using a "flat" list, the
capability is still there to add "children", so a space has to be left, since
it would be ugly and less useful to have childless parents not in line with
parents who have children.

So, add to the "very minor enhancements someday list" to add to List
Preferences "flat style with no children" (that would not leave space for
expand/collapse arrows).

PS Paragraphs like the above make me wonder if people come across this
discussion group by doing web searches about parenting. For example, the
earlier thread "Mass Promotion of Children" could easily have been about the
current tendency to never flunk any kids in school. :-)

Actually, my message (that you are replying to here) was solely due to an
archives search.

It's no big deal to me what Jeff names anything -- I clicked on "Apply" the
first time by chance anyway :-) :-) .

But, I was just agreeing with the previous posters that it was somewhat
confusing, especially to those who are used to the normal naming conventions
(although I'll have to give Jeff's further explanation some thought in this
particular case).

If you read Yahoo!Groups like GtD_Palm, you'll see that there is a large
"untapped" customer base for Shadow Plan, which consists of people who are not
technically savvy - unlike almost all of the current users.

In fact, for that reason, it's probably to Jeff's financial advantage to do the
User Guide before doing Mac support or further Desktop support (even though
that is not what existing users would like)...

PS In case you are wondering, I have indeed registered Shadow - the HH and DT
package.

And i was playing with you to a degree Ken...and how old was that archive message you were now agreeing with? ; )

I'd love some additional GTD type stuff in Shadow too, and was in that Yahoo group for a while until it began repeating itself like many general type forums tend to do over time. One of the reasons i wanted the to do link on the next item automatically once one item is checked...the "next action" type stuff. However, i'm sure once Jeff gets ALLLLLLLL the requests completed, he will have time to focus on some of this other stuff and the user guide will also be top notch.

As for the technical non-savvy, tough for too many people to cater to them first as it seems many don't understand well written user guides from my experience mainly because they have little understanding of technology itself. I find many non-tech will either never read the user guide in the first place, or read it and then ask a question about what it means or how to do what was explained in the user guide itself. Not a put down, but just seems to be reality to a large degree. My thought would be if they don't understand, and the user guide isn't up to par for them, and they know about Yahoo groups, then join the Shadow discuss group! And, from my review most of the stuff that would be used by non-tech savvy users is already in the current user guide!

And smart move registering both the HH and DT, for why not get the sync ability now and then as Jeff finalizes the DT touches you get those additional benefits as it gets better and better through this year!

Keep being positive and enjoying this great technology at our disposal. : )

It's mostly a case of organization.

The current "Reference Guide" is indeed organized in the order one encounters
the menus, rather than organized from basic concepts through basic operations
to advanced operations.

A true "Users Guide" would start by defining all the terms as they are used in
Shadow: Files, Lists, Parents, Children, Tags, Links, and so on...

>As for the technical non-savvy, tough for too many people to cater to them first...

Of course, one caters first to the tech-savvy, in order to establish your
program. However, after a certain number of years, "first" is over. But,
ultimately, that's for Jeff to decide. Certainly, he could go the same route
as CESD and DateBk5, which is to cater solely to the power user...

I would vote yes upon the condition that it is *in addition* to the
heritage of the item. The reason being that you can choose to limit
your tree depth if you wish, thus shortening the string.

As for me I see the tree as inheritance and tags as associations (in
OO terms, that is)

Kevin,

You have a serious problem known as "projection".

At no point have I:

- spoken FOR the "Palm" world
- spoken FOR the "GtD" world
- put down CESD

If you actually go back and read the 3 sentences containing "Palm", "GtD", and
"CESD" at a slow reading speed conducive to comprehension, rather than vague
impressions, you will see that your post is a "straw man" argument,

My perception of a group called "shadow-discuss" is that the purpose is to
discuss Shadow. If the group was called "shadow-support", then the purpose
would be to only say good things about Shadow (referring to the common
discussion group meaning of "support" rather than the tech meaning).

But, in fact, if you look carefully at the paragraphs of mine which you
appended below, you will see that the pejorative content is all in your mind.

PS And your comments are also off-topic ...

In 15 years on the Internet, I have never inferred anything.

Let's take an example just to be clear.

I stated:

" But, ultimately, that's for Jeff to decide. Certainly, he could go the
same route as CESD and DateBk5, which is to cater solely to the power user... "

Now somehow you projected that someone would think that there was something
negative about catering solely to the power user. However, nothing about the
words I used had any negativity.

By making a tool designed for power users, CESD has created something that is
more useful than if it were watered down to make it more accessible to Joe
Average. But, perhaps CESD would have sold more copies if he had watered it
down. As developer/owner, the choice is clearly his (he's certainly entitled
to derive income from his work). Either way, there is nothing negative about
his choice.

What is puzzling to me is why you would claim that I was being negative, and
then when replying, carefully edit my posts to remove my statements that
obviously contradicted your premise.

For example you state:

" You ... tell Jeff how he should be doing things different on a regular
basis..."

while you carefully remove MY statement:

" But, ultimately, that's for Jeff to decide. "

I was discussing Jeff's app, when out of nowhere, someone decided to attack me
personally for making suggestions about the app.

I usually make a point of responding to such statements - if the statements are
correct, I apologize for anything I've done wrong.

But, if - as in this case - the statements are 100% incorrect - then I find
that I need to counter the misinformation, because people generally believe
what they read.

For example, I don't want people to believe his misconception that I have
something against CESD, when in fact, I have been using the program since
before the DateBk3 release, and indeed, a few features on DateBk4 were ones
that I initially suggested.

When I carefully and specifically pointed out that his attacks were factually
incorrect, the person who attacked me did not graciously admit his mistakes,
but instead came up with further false rationalizations in an effort to
continue his vendetta.

So, the start of the off-topic posts begin with his use of "Ken, ...." and are
kept going by him. I don't refer to personalities in discussion groups (at
least not until personally attacked by someone else).

Jeff,
Have heard mention here befoe by some others when selecting a
multiple line item (wrapped) only the first line is readable -- I
guess that means line 2 and on retain there font color. This
continues to happen for me even with the default theme and col-bg
unchecked. Is this a little bug or is it intentional? Not really much
of a problem except when one has several multiple line items that
start out with the same text in the first line.

Start by opening your backup folder on your desktop, search for your
list. The name should be "Shad-XXXX" where XXXXX is the name of the
list.

Make a copy of the file and move it to a safe place, drag the orginal
from your backup folder to your install folder, sync and you should have
it back on your desktop.

(This should at least work on my Mac 8-)

The way I see it ShadowLinkHack handles this problem just fine
without adding complexity to ShadowPlan or extra text to the ToDo
Notes. I wouldn't want all that extra text duplicated in all of my
ToDo's. Tags seem to be handled very efficiently within ShadowPlan
but would take up lots of extra space if replicated as text in a
couple hundred ToDo items.

Besides, I am waiting for much more important things like linking
and syncing to lists stored on a memory card.

Jeff,

How about making the ToDo Category available as a column header
preference in the list view? We can go to the link manager and see
the ToDo Category, but it would be nice to make it viewable in the
list. Something like the tag column. Being able to sort by that
column sounds like it would be too much.

Sorry if this has been discussed...I searched but didn't see anything.

Thanks for the input.

I'm only chiming in here because it is fairly obvious *both* of you
are not reading what was said (IMO).

Ken, you stated in your original comment that a "true 'User's Guide'"
would be organized in a particular way.

The document that accompanies SP is a "Manual", not a user's guide,
there is a *big* difference. Even on the title page it refers to
itself as a "Reference Guide". For example, your car's owner's manual
does not teach you how to drive, does it?

I *do* agree that *most* "user guides" should be organized as you
said, but that is subjective and your use of the word "true" did imply
a tone of finality to it.

On the other hand, your comment about CESD, as far as I can tell, was
pretty accurate, and I don't see any negativity there myself. I'm not
sure he entirely caters to power users since he has several versions
of his application, but you are definitely entitled to your opinion.

I hope that my adding a third perspective to this only helps to show a
less impassioned view of the comments made. It is my sincere wish
that anyone offended by anything here, please try to reevaluate the
worth of vesting such time and energy on a relatively trivial thing.

Please, just let it go guys!

Virtual Graffiti is a feature of Sony Clie NR70, NR70V, NX60 and NX70V model
PDAs.

The new version of Shadow supports that Virtual Graffiti feature.

[ Handera also supports Virtual Graffiti, but that Handera's VG is not yet
supported in this version of Shadow. ]

Subject: Fatal Exception in Shadow

Help! My Shadow application was working fine until about an hour ago
(not to insinuate that its the app that is causing the problem,
though ... I just don't know). When I'm in LauncherX and I tap on
the Shadow icon, I get a "Fatal Exception" message and have to do a
soft reset. The only thing I did different (between when I could vs.
could not open Shadow) was that I changed the color in my "Colorize"
application. I have since deleted that app but the problem remains.

Another data point ... I can't seem to be able to open the native
launcher. In other words, when I try to exit LauncherX, I get
a "Fatal Exception" message then as well.

One other data point ... there now seems to be another Shadow app on
my LauncherX desktop. Looking at the database info, it says that it
was created today 1/5/03 and its file size is the same as the Shadow
app (264K). The other icon that I normally tap to open Shadow, based
on the database info, indicates that it is only 7K.

If anyone could PLEASE advise me as to what the problem might be, I
would be very grateful! I am away and unable to hotsync / backup
(although I do have a memory stick with me) for a few days. What do
I do??!!

Much thanks,

You also are reading something into my comment that is not there.

I am referring to a Users Guide *in addition* to the existing Reference Guide.

This does not mean that there is anything wrong with a Reference Guide being a
Reference Guide, it's just that it is not a Users Guide, which is *also*
needed.

The other piece of information that Kevin and you seem to be missing is from:

http://www.codejedi.com/shadowplan/bugtrack.html

which lists the following upgrade planned by Jeff for some future date:

" Some better 'user guide' type helpful documentation, as opposed to reference
guide type information which we already have aplenty "

Having read that, I posted:

> It's mostly a case of organization.
>
>The current "Reference Guide" is indeed organized in the order one encounters

>to advanced operations.
>
>A true "Users Guide" would start by defining all the terms as they are used in

The phrase "true Users Guide" is a common idiomatic use which means "something
that fits the commonly used term 'Users Guide' " (rather than something that
uses the term, but is actually some other sort of guide).

As such, I was merely agreeing with Jeff...

a few thoughts that might help...

if you have a file manager, go to it for some info.

if you have 2 Shadow applications, delete one of them, but make sure not to delete any other data files or Shadow files.

are you low on memory (RAM) in the unit itself? may need to move some items to your memory stick to free up some memory or delete some unneeded apps and/or data files. many times i have noticed you can get a fatal exception message, and then your third party launcher does not want to launch for lack of memory. usually likes about double RAM free compared to the RAM size of the app you are launching, but will still usually do it as long as you have free at least as much as the app itself, but sometimes not depending on the app.

try a couple of those suggestions and see if you find anything. good luck.

Just a comment from my experience... the only 3rd party launcher that I've
found to be reliable and stable lately (in OS4.1 on Clie) is ZLauncher (which
is not to say that other's experiences would not be different).

If you are willing to take some time to experiment, try uninstalling LauncherX
altogether (temporarily) and see if the problem remains.

This is not to say that your problem is in LauncherX, but rather to offer it as
one possibility.

PS Another possibility is that the Colorize app is flawed, and that it will
take a hard reset to remove all of its effects. Again, just throwing out
possibilities...

I've been using Launcher X for quite some time with MANY programs, and many in and out of it, and it works great. Don't suspect Launcher X has anything to do with your problem so that wouldn't be my focus if i were you!

Ken,

I believe this is by design. What if you you used ShadowLink to return to
the list, but the item you chose was filtered out? Could be very confusing.

I can't recall what unit you have, does it have a memory extension slot like memory stick or SD? If you have two shadow apps, one full size and one only 7k sounds to me that there is a launcherx shortcut created for it. Did you have shadow on the card and then moved it to ram? If you create a shortcut to an app on the card, then move the app back to ram, you have to delete the shortcut or the launcher still tries to find it on the card. This can cause a crash. The other thing I would do is to make sure you do a manual refresh in launcherx.

Subject: Date-based filter rules

Jeff,
When I'm creating a custom filter using tags, I would like to be able to use the same sort of time filters (eg specifically current/past targets) as the built-in filters, as well as the tag, yet I only have available last week, this week, yesterday, today, tomorrow, next 7 days, next week (for eg Target date). I realise you could build combinations of these, but for example you can't build an equivalent of 'current/past targets' from these. Is there any chance you could add or modify the choices for the date based rules to make this possible in the future?
Hope this makes sense!
Andrew

I posted this message to the "LauncherX" group as well.

In my meager attempt to fix the problem, I delete the shortcut (set
up in LX) that I had to Shadow (which was running off my card). I am
now in a fatal exception loop -- everytime I perform a soft reset, it
continues to give me a "fatal exception" message. There does not
seem to be any way to get to any other screen. Any advice would be
greatly appreciated!!

Todd

*******************************

I've been using the task notes to store date on task size and time estimates.
(e.g. "read chap 3, 25 pages, 1hr" and "write JCC file parser, ~30 production
rules, 2 days")

I go back to see unrealistic my estimates were and add the actual time to the
note. Later when I get an itch to under-estimate I get a reality check from the
notes.

Can estimate/actual become task detail fields?

sounds like not enough memory remaining in RAM...you never addressed whether you had lots of memory space on the pda itself or were getting full.

i notice you have hacks...sometimes just prior to the fatal exception it will ask to enable hacks or not, click no or cancel to not enable and sometimes that will eliminate the fatal exception occasionally..try it a couple times. if you can get by that point, in applications i would click on delete, then delete a few apps you can reload later, and see if it frees up space and makes things run smoother.

do you backup in some manner? hopefully, through the card backup, backupbuddy, or something, and if you do, may be time to do the hard reset and slowly load the stuff back on your unit one by one. let us know which backup system you use, if you do, and there may be a few tips to help you not load back what is currently problematic.

i think someone mentioned the colorize program potentially messing up system resources/settings, and if so, you may have to do a hard reset no matter what. have to be VERY careful about loading stuff lots don't use or that is very new. if it isn't a real popular program, ask in the forums first if anyone has had problems before loading.

good luck,
Kevin

For that matter, I really would like to write a User Guide. But I
just don't know where to begin.. ideally, I'd like someone to say "heres
the topics you need to address from a newbies perspective". Its very tough
from my perspective to climb into the heads of the entirely unsavvy. I
also need a tough editor who can say "don't use jargon!" a lot :)

If theres any way to help build a topic list, I'd love to hear
it. In terms of a user guide, the things *I* like to see are recipes
books.. like a FAQ, but easy to follow, wordy, and lots of general
topics. "How do I use ToDo links?" "How do I set up tags?" etc. But I'm
not sure what is expected, or more importantly.. needed.

	Anyone want to help?

application) and now I find myself in an endless loop of "fatal
exceptions". I can't even get to the screen that asks if I want to
enable hacks. Uggh.

I'm prepared for the hard reset if worse comes to worse. I'm fairly
new to the Clie so most of my data should be recoverable through a
hot sync when I get back to my computer at the office (primarily
addresses and calendar items). There are probably some settings that
I will lose (like in LauncherX and DateBk5), but not much. Hanging
my head in shame ... I will be investing in BackUpBuddy (or the like)
before the end of the week.

Any other advice ... other than back up your data better :-/

Same handheld side; the Mac OSX desktop and conduit tie into the
same systems that the Windows and Unix stuff does. (Its a pretty neat
little system) ie: Shadow uses raw palm databases, and the conduit ties
into them. It goes through an interface "ShadowSync" as a layer of
abstraction for some of the data. As long as you have ShadowSync on your
handheld in main RAM, the conduit will work be it from a Mac or Windows.
The desktop itself is all one codebase for all platforms.. only the
OS-dependant libraries and the conduit need to change for each platform,
and the conduit has an OS-independant core. For the Mac desktop, you will
just copy a couple of files to specific places on yuor machine and your'e
done :)

look at how bonsai handles linking from the desktop jeff.

i think it doesn't have to know know anything about the desktop
outlook, pim, etc, sinc it only links after being synched on the
handheld. all the linking is done automatically on the handheld after
synch.

I think you miss the point that we dont' need the desktop to be
linked to the apps on the desktop, but to flag the link on the
desktop so that it is automatically processed once it gets to the
hand held. It was this aspect of bonsai that made me make a switch
to bonsai from SP, but your tagging was too good to pass up so i'm
back, but still mmissing flagging items on the desktop to be linked
once they get back to the desktop.

the bonsai approach of this type of linking did it's work flawlessly.

Before doing a hard reset, have you tried a "warm" reset? Do the reset
while holding the "Up" button, and it just might bypass LauncherX and get
you to a place where you can correct things. Then do a soft reset to get
things back into normal operation. Hope this helps.

The ToDo category is "foreign"; its in the ToDo database and not
Shadow. The best we could have in memory would be the category-id, and
then for each item we display on screen do a lookup of the ID to string to
display it. It could impact performance, though I suppose with
optimization it could be okay. Maybe after the OSX stuff :)

No; we don't know when you do things outside of Shadow. On
entering Shadow, we do present the option of severing all links.. we could
add an operation to delete all items that are broken-linked, instead of
severing, I suppose.

Did you try a pinhole-reset (not after the error occurs, but just
while you're in the launcher)? That can refresh some of the OS stuff that
gets jumbled up. Also, if stuck, try installing Shadow.prc again fresh (or
run setup26.exe for instance, which will do it too).

Let me know if you're still stuck and we can get down-and-dirty.

Perhaps you had LX create a stub.. I forget what they call it, but
a mini-app. You put it in main memory, and the main app on expansioncard,
and then you can still sync, and launch it from main memory via the
stub. Shouldn't hurt anything.

	Try the above.

with that much memory left does not sound like memory. if you do decide on the hard reset, make sure to go into your Sony, SK, backup folder and take out the colorize program and any other files from it, so it will not sync them back in by some chance. if you are in an endless loop and soft reset does nothing, then sounds like you are on the way to the hard reset...bummer, and a pain, but cleans it back up. not much to think of if you can't get out of that loop even once. if you can, reload and install shadow. if no difference, then clearly not a corrupted shadow file, and i have not had a problem with any shadow file in a long, long time so don't think that is it. with this problem so bad, i'd do the hard reset anyhow just to clean it up, so it doesn't have problems when you really need it.

Thanks for reminding me, Kevin. I have ~ 4,500K of RAM left. It
doesn't seem that that is low enough to cause my problems. But I

When you enter Shadow via a link, Shadow turns off the filter. Its
the lazy mans approach to making sure the item you're jumping to is
actually visible. Theres some complexity in maintaining the state of the
filters, and when coming ni from a link it is not yet available.. so we
just turn off the filter, and thus your item is visible to be linked
to. (ie: Imagine coming in from a link and Shadow can't find the item
because it is filtered out :)

Scott,

WOW! This helped. I can now at least get to the native launcher.
However, as I try certain applications (i.e. MegaLauncher and
LauncherX in particular), it appears that the software is not
recognizing the device as hi-res. In other words, they're giving me
error messages about " ... only running on 320 x 320 devices ..."
Also, I still get the "fatal exception" message when I try to launch
Shadow (I'm trying not to let this get too off-topic although I may
be too late). And finally, when I turn the Clie off, I can not get
it to start again except by doing a warm reset.

Any suggestions about how to proceed? Obviously, I'm hoping to not
have to do a hard reset :-(

Current/Past is actually "Target <= Today" (or you coudl
aggregate.. Target = Today OR Target <= Today).

So I think you're covered on that one? Theres a few internal
filters (like next step) that you cannot build with custom filters.. but
not many.

	Eeep. Teh battery is ticking...

Try a pinhole-reset while holding down one of the page up or page
down arrows (I think it was page up). This type of reboot tells it to
ignore a lot of stuff it wouldn't otherwise ignore.. and should let you
get to the built in launcher. If you can't get out of the
soft-reset-loop.. eep. Hard reset :(

I'm hoping to sometime add a "misc text" field that you could put
whatever you want into (short). I have thought about somer more date
fields.. more project management oriented, though.. could be useful. We'll
see, once the Mac OSX side is out and we can re-evaluate what direction to
go in for new features :)

yeah, thats how I've said I'd do it. The question was just how to
do it initially, since I have limited resources for the next month or two.
The old rule applies.. everything is possible.. just how do you want it

IF you can get out of the crash loop (not activating the hacks is the best), the Clie software has a card-backup utility installed (MS backup). Assuming you have a high capacity MS, run the backup program, get all your data backed up on the MS, and then do the hard reset...or you won't ever be free of the F-E crash loop for sure. Definitely get BackupBuddy, it will back everything on your Clie, and also anything on your MS. It has saved my ass numerous times.

I learned something many many years ago, when hard drives would
die much more frequently ;) (And I'll ignroe the obvious "backup here"
comments :)

So your hard drive, PDA, or whatever dies. You lose years of
accumulated data, trivia, and "stuff". For a day and a half you rant and
rave and are in a foul mood.

Then, suddenly.. you have freedom. You reformat the drive or
PDA.. suddenly, its *all empty*. What was one accumulated trivia is now
blank space, waiting for new trivia and junk to be amassed. A 10GB drive
you were sturggling for free space is now 9GB free for the using. Its a
joyous occasion :)

Okay, in my opinion you're a little launcher-rich. I think too many
launchers is a bad thing. Now that you can, I would delete the additional
launchers, and then try reinstalling the one you really want to use. But
before you reinstall the launcher, get rid of Colorize and make sure Shadow
is okay. If necessary reinstall it as Jeff suggested.

As far as the problem restarting the PDA, once you get rid of the
additional launchers, doing a normal soft reset should get things back to
normal.

Scott,

Todd
