if you switch to TextPlus this problem doesn't occur. Textplus is

Subject: hiding checked items?
|
| |
Hi folks,
I'm a relative newbie to Shadow, but I really like the program, especially
with recent desktop improvements. Discovered you all while doing some
online research about David Allen's "Getting Things Done," but we won't go
into that. Let's just say I'm very happy to have found Shadow.
I have a fairly simple question. Is it possible to have checked items
disappear from view, as they do (or can) in the Palm ToDo app? I realize
there are all kinds of issues once you start working in a multi-tiered
environment, which is why Shadow is so cautious/picky about deleting
anything (whether parents or children). But I also find it awkward to have
all those checked items cluttering my lists, and there's no shortcut/quick
method of getting rid of them apart from the menu (and no command shortcut
- I often use my Palm keyboard).
Any advice / help?
Thanks, and great program!

Yes it is. Pick the menu option Tools > Manage Filters, choose Built-
in, then Unchecked items and tap Done. Presto, checked items are now
hidden.

Made a little mistake there: you should tap Apply instead of Done to
activate the filter.

Welcome to the forum :)

Sure thing; you're looking for Filters, which are available under
the List pulldown menu as well as the [F] top-right popmenu. Just pull up
the Filter Manager and find the filter you like and hit "Apply". There is
a built-in filter for checked items (to show or hide them), and you can
construct your own filters to do this and other things (though
constructing filters is an advanced topic.. see the Reference Guide for
details).

Once you get the hang of filters, they're a snap; its two taps to
disable or re-enable the filter, so its pretty easily done. (ie: Using the
[F] top right popmenu.. there is a Remove Filter option if a filter is
active, and after doing that you can re-enable the last filter just as
easily from the same place)
Cheers!

Ah ha! Jeff, you see that!!! I'm not the only one who intuitively
goes to the wrong place to activate a filter. I still say "Apply"
should be in the place that is now occupied by "Done" and "cancel"
should replace "done" functionality and go to the right of apply.
Just a minor issue actually but one that hangs me up almost every

Jeff,
The different numbering system is just a little disconcerting. I
don't fell that it is necessary to address. I don't have a particular
answer if you decided to do something, however if you did I don't
know that the best answer is listed in the poll. You're a creative
kind of guy -- maybe there's something not currently done by any
other app that would work. I think what would be ideal is something
that allows the user to feel confident about having the latest
versions of each component (i.e. HH, DT, conduit) without extensive
searching on the web site. In other words something, that is clear
from the #ing shown in the Help>About or displayed while the conduit
is doing it's thing. Something that ties each component together,
displays the overall evolution of ShadowPlan AND the evolution of
each of the components too.
Maybe a tall order, I don't know. Again, I don't think it's necessary
to address.

Its bugged a couple of people, so if its an easy fix, we'll take
it :)
I did think about somethign in the About menu or dekstop and
handheld which says the versions its "rated for"; ie: Handheld 2.6 would
say "Rated for desktop 1.2.5" and vice versa. But this is something that
would bound to be forgotten to update when I assemble distributions.. so I
hate building in things I know I'll forget sometime ;)
We'll see. We'll come up with something :)
Really, I just need to add a function to the desktop so it can
check for updates and install whatever is newer. Then it wouldn't matter..

One of the things I use Shadow for is project management (go figure). Those lists are my 'always link new items to ToDo' lists, this way I can follow via the Palm Desktop. Once an item is completed and checked, I'm not interested in deleting it on Shadow but I am interested in it no longer appearing on the Palm Desktop. For this to happen I would need to sever the link every time an item is completed. Would it be possible to set a list pref 'Delete ToDo Link on checking' or something of the sort? Right now I need to Filter Checked Items, switch Views to Flat and then untap all those little Ts until I go crazy :) Which isn't so bad, but things could be even better.
thanks

Jeff,
I played around with FontBucket a little, and found that I could put
the program file on my CF card using Handera's Autocard. With no
actual fonts installed, I still get all the Handera fonts in Shadow -
and effectively no hit to my memory. Then, since I was really just
interested in smaller fonts for Shadow, I deleted all the FontBucket
fonts except 4 (Arial 10 and 11 point, standard and bold). This
gave me everything I needed font support for and my Fontbucket
database (which must reside in RAM) is only 15k.
Long way of saying, time spent adding built-in support for the
Handera fonts is probably time spent better elsewhere - like making
the C/F/V buttons bigger in hi res :-)
Now that I can use these little fonts, I think there's room for that
miscellaneous field we've talked about...
Thanks again. I fear support for the Handera API will fade out
given their device's sales volume and the move to OS5 so I really
appreciate your commitment to what is probably a pretty small part
of your user base.

Hi, Jeff. Some time ago you indicated you'd be working on
highlighting eventually. At that time I asked about background color

Is it or will it ever be possible to invoke more than one reasons to
highlight at the same time, such as red for overdue, another color
for radar, etc.? Thanks for your consideration.

Jacob,
I don't know of any direct way to do this. But until Jeff puts
everything anyone ever wanted into Shadow... ;)
I have a "work-around" for this. Archive your completed ToDos from
the standard database. I do this manually in Outlook, just sort,
filter, highlight and move to a separate "pst" file I have for the
purpose. I'm assuming there is a parallel in the Palm DT.
This effectively deletes the ToDos from the database. When you sync
next, Shadow sees these as broken links and will clean them up for
you.
One caveat. Be sure you don't have any broken links before you purge,
otherwise you'll let Shadow clean links that should have been
repaired.

Maybe. I've not decided yet. I first need to allow custom filters
to be used as hilight filters, and then we'll see.. its mostly a
performance issue.

Do a file find for lastsync.txt and post that to me; Hotsync log

I'm not entirely sure what you mean; ie: If stuff is offscreen,
you coudl scroll down to it, page down to it, or collapse items to make it
visible. Make sure you're using the public beta from the frontpage of the
website, which makes collapsing/expanding a little less fudgey. If you've
not disabled the scrollbar, it makes things easy.. just tap to scroll down
a little or a lot at your leisure..

or so. I figured I might as well offer it to you guys.. we've all been
trhough the fire already so why not keep up the fun? :) Nothing really
exciting, but pretty cool.
Caveat: Only works on Tugnsten T and Sony NX70 .. OS5 and ARM
power required. Expect a reset or two (no data loss). Older untis need not
apply (sorry, this needs serious horsepower).
If you're interested reply to me personally (not to this
list. This isn't Shadow related, but a new Codejedi product)

Would those be bad for the payer, the payee or both? Paul Nevai

I've heard bad stories; I cant' say whethor they're substantiated
or not, but they were enough to scare me. For both seller and buyer. I
won't go into details, since that wouldn't be right. I suggest poking
around yourself :) (ie: see www.paypalsucks.com or whatever it is :)

Hmm. Thats a toughie. Did you try a larger font? (ie: By default,
hi-res is a tiny font. You can use the built in larger font, and its a
little better to work with)

They do, but the tap area (vertically) increases with the font
size, making them easier to hit :)

I've got a 2.6.8 version that has a new feature I've called
"theming".. you can specify the colour schemes for the list view. It works
flawlessly for most people I think, but a couple of people have reported
some colour painting oddities.. so I think its time to beta and get more
input and try and narrow in one what the problem could be..
Get it here:
http://www.codejedi.com/shadowplan/shadow-test/shadow268a.zip
If you have a colour unit, go to the global prefs and hit Next a
couple of times.. for most people the Theme Prefs panel will be the 3rd
panel. (Only shows up for colour units).
For Clie's, you must be in high-res mode with Shadow
itself.. Shadow won't let you use themes in low-res or high-res-assist
mode due to Sony OS bugs which crash the unit (their bad, not mine).
So try out the theming.. set up colours how you like them. Try
tapping up and down the list to select and deselect numerous items in a
row, open and close lists, scroll around, make new ones.. all the normal
routine.
Let us know of any oddity you see. It should work more or less
as it does now, except you can play with colour more :)
It doesn't theme the file selection screen yet.
Notes:
If a list is only half a screen long, the rest of the screen
should still be white. Let me know if this is otherwise.
One person reported seeing the theme painting showing up behind
some of the buttons on a Clie. Let me know if you see anything like this.
One person with a Clie reported seeing the wrong paint being used
for items as he tapped down the screen. Let me know i you see this.. I'd
really liek to know which OS version and unit it occurred on :)
When an item is selected, its autonumber will temporarily look
like its a zero. That'll be fixed in the release.. this is a beta after
all ;)
Let me know how it goes :)
AFAIK this version works very well, though there could be oddities
on some particular model of Clie or the like, perhaps. Thats what I need
to find out :)

Jeff,
Been off for awhile - been too busy setting up my own business!
managed to pick up v.2.6.0 when it came out. Checking the list out
today, See lots of new updates but seems to be focused on OS5 etc.
etc.
I am still using a IIIxe with OS 3.5.3. For now I don't need the
colour, hi-res etc.
My question is - do I get anything out of the updates? I see some
drag and drop updates but that wasn't a problem for me (hardly used
it :)
Thanks.
BTW - any way to print on DT with just the list and not all the
additional info - start date etc. etc.

For those of you using ShadowPlan and the GTD system, can you tell me
what your system is for integrating the two? Ideally, I am looking
for a system that is geared towards entering most of my data from my

Jeff,
After installing 2.6.8, I see a noticeable lag when I click on an
item. Each time I click on another item there is a short pause before
it's selected. This occurs whether or not I've made any changes to the
color themes. I'm using a IIIc. Yes, I now it's old but I never saw
this lag before. I just reinstalled 267a and the lag isn't there.
Any optimization that you need to work on? Otherwise, this may be too
much of a performance hit on older machines.

Subject: More about filters and menus
|
| |
Thanks for the helpful replies about using filters to hide checked items.
Should have seen that myself. Having the filter button at the top is much
faster than using menus (more on this below). Several more questions
1. Is it possible to combine, or otherwise customize, the built-in filters?
Say I want to see this week's target items (or any other selection), but
hide the ones that are already checked? Some of the built-ins are pretty
easy to recreate inside a custom filter, but others are more complex, and
they don't show their actual definitions
2. Is there any way to navigate the menus using either a Palm keyboard
(e.g. cursor keys) or even the graffiti pad? I'm finding my aim on
activating menu items is terrible. (I fear it may be my machine/screen,
which is a hand-me-down Palm III that is, otherwise, in good shape) About
half the time the menu disappears, and the other half I get something I
don't want. I use shortcuts / command keys, but not all functions have them.
BTW, thanks, Jeff, for the tip about up/down strokes for moving items on
the list. I was just going to ask about the graffiti equivalent of those
buttons. It's mentioned in the manual, but "swipe up" and "swipe down" were
less clear to me than your email explanation of "up/down" and "down/up" so
I hadn't been able to get this to work for me. Also, is there (likely to
be) a keyboard equivalent of the same - maybe one of Ctrl/Shift/Alt with
the cursor keys?

Hmm; There might be a few fixes or minor things.. my brain is too

Not easily; you could do a save-as HTML, open it in Word or the
like and trim out the tables..

How much lag are you talking? Milliseocnd or second?
With the new theme code, an item must be "redrawn" rather than
just "reversed". Its a little slower, but the speed to draw a single item
shoudl be pretty fast. Ahh, I suppose theres possibilities of lag in that
we have to lock down the icons to render them (from the sresources), and
perhaps your unit is slow to lock resources. I wonder if the speed of
resource lock varies by the number of files on the handheld or
anything.. hmm..
again, how much lag? I'll try and look into it a little.
Anyone else notice anything?

I could try and buld something in to dodge theming if necessary,
but it'd be "inelegant".

Do you have col-bg turned off on those lists? (List Preferences)
It works great on your NR70? If you tap on each item going down
the list, or on every other item going down the list, all is fine? No
weird painting side effects?

Sorry, not yet. I've not had time to run it through testing yet,
so it didn't clear to beta. It'll likely be in the next beta in a day or
two, after it goes through a pass of testing.

The built ins are not implemented in terms of the custom
filters. Some of them cannot be done yet with customers, even. You can
attempt re-create them if you need to modify them.

Theres "OKey" and "LapTopHack" that could help, among others. I've
never looked into such things, so I wouldn't know too much more than those
which get mentioned a lot.

Jeff,
I;ve noticed one thing already with 2.6.8 installed:
When I select items in a list my numbering system character is
changed on that item. My standard numbering system is: "I,A,1" for
the first 3 levels. Now when I select a "I" item the character turns
to a period "." When I select an "A" item the character turns to an
ampersand "@". When I select a "1" item the character turns to an "0".
If I leave the list and then return all items return to their proper
enumeration symbol.

Wow! I was just experimenting around with some different color
schemes:
Odd: Yellow back, black text
Even: Dark Green back, red text
On my Prism I get a pronounced 3D effect that is incredible! It looks
like the yellow/black lines are 1mm "higher" than the green/red.
Pretty cool Jeff!!
However, one other thing I noticed. The theme coloration doesn't
apply to the enumeration, "expand" triangle, link arrow. This can
make those characters tough to see with the green/red lines. Anyway
the theme coloration can be applied to those item characters as well?

Jeff,
The lag is "significant". Since I don't have it installed now I am
guessing. I'd say it was about half a second. That compares to
basically instant response in version 267a.
I'd ask any others with older units to download this version to see if
they get the same (slow) response when going from item to item.

I also have a IIIc, and I also see a bit of a lag, maybe 1/4 to 1/2 of
a second. The other peculiarity I notice is that with come background
colors the forground color of the check box changes from what I have
it set to (black) to something lighter..
But don't get me wrong, I really like this feature, despite these

Strange. I'd hate to have the feature not work on old units :/

Enumeration?
Icons aren't easily changable on the fly, so they stay the same
colour always (or should). If you set dark backgrounds, not much I can do

Hi Jeff
On my T615, if I select colour options everything works fine.
However, with no Col-bg selected and the colours set to default the
following happens:
1. the selected item colour is black (not blue)
2. the second and subsequent lines of a selected item disappear or
the font is black on black rather than white on black.

Hi, Jeff. I working off a Clie T615-C in hi-res mode. I have the
same problem with themes that I do with font size--I can't change the
preference permanently. It goes back to the default when I exit
Shadow. Themes do the same thing, colors go back to default when I
exit. If you ever find a way to fix this (esp the font size) I'm
very interested.
On the plus side, the use of themes doesn't seem to slow the reponse
time on my unit.

Hi Sharon
I have tried the following:
1. col-gb on, fonts and themes will stay put after exiting
completely.
2. with col-gb off, fonts stay put, but no colour at all.
I have Fontbucket installed, but I have X-master and Fonthack 123
configured to my preferences and don't really use Fontbucket.
Fonthack might have something to do with it.
I'll test some more tomorrow.

Couldn't wait till tomorrow so I tried setting themes with Fonthack
swithced off and when I had col-bg turned off, everything
disappeared except for the bubbles. Interesting.
With col-bg switched on, everything was fine even after an exit.
Changing fonts, same thing. Nothing with col-bg off and everything

Nope, haven't had tiem to work on the filtering subsystem in

enhancements), and then get the mac OSX alpha to beta quality and in
