Interesting thoughts, but that sounds like the tags would be the same
every time if you do that global list pref thing-- or will it be able to
take the tags of the top level item?
And yes, it might bloat things a bit, but I don't use tags very much for
one reason-- I use Shadow for all of my planning, and Agendus for all of
my doing. Make sense? I don't really go to Shadow in the heat of the
moment, while I have Agendus running all day when my TT is on the cradle
at my desk. So any Shadow info that I can see in Agendus is a really
good thing.

Can you make it so a drag has to be longer than a line height? That way a
drag has to be relatively long before it has an effect.

(Remembering that its more a function of time than distance; you
could drag up and down the screen all over the place, and then drop it
right near by.. the fact is that you did it for awhile, so you know what
you were doing. If the OS mis-detects a drag and tells Shadow, then its a
function of time.. if it was so instantaneous, then we nkow it was just
the OS being sensitive. Distance isn't so accurate, or correct for what
we're trying to stop, which is accidental drags due to the OS. If you do
an accidetnal drag on your own, thats your own business ;)

Subject: RE: Grouping or Copy of Tags

What I would prefer as a user involves three options, Jeff:
1) a new option in the item details screen "children inheret tags from
parent". That would automatically take care of this when creating children.
2) an new tag maintenance screen "group tags". This would allow the user to
set up groups for tags by creating a new group name, then choosing (using
check-boxes or something...) various tags that fall under that group. Users
can then assign either an individual tag to an item, or a group. Choosing
the group would automatically assign each tag that's a member of the group to
the item.
i.e. Group Tag: Office Urgent (includes Office and Urgent)
Assigning this group tag would automatically assign "office" and urgent" to
the item, but as separate items. Once you actually look at the tags, no
reference would be there to indicate that group -- just two separate tags.
3) your suggestion about being able to copy the tags from an item.

I'm glad that this is the case, but if you hadn't told me I would not
have known. On your web site, the handheld and desktop are protrayed
as being completely separate. They even have separate web pages -- it
took me a while just to *find* the desktop app's web page.
I understand that *you* think it's obvious. Everything is obvious if
you already know it. For people who don't already know (and who
actually care what version of the software they are running), it is
not obvious.
Thanks for the help fixing the sync problem, btw. Your workaround
(deleting the desktop files and re-syncing) fixed it. I'm still
curious why the sync wasn't working to begin with, but as long as it
works now, that's the important thing. The lack of reliable
synchronization with the desktop app was my only remaining criticism
of the handheld version of Shadow Plan. Well done.

I'll think about it. What this really screams to me is to move the
auto-numbering from List Prefs to its own window, where we have
auto-numbering and colouration and other level formatting details, and a
button to this window from list prefs. So list prefs becomes a filename,
some options, and a few buttons to deeper options.
I'll add it to my list. Once the Mac stuff goes alpha/beta, we can
start building priorities for the next steps..

The full screen Details window lets you set an items text colour
as well as bolding. See the bottom right of the dialog box.. the [B]
button for bolding, and the black square for selecting a colour. You can
also boldy+colour-ify based on criterion using the Hilight option in the

Jeff: 2.6.7 is very tight...the high res looks great on my Clie NR-70. I've got two questions:
1] I've enabled high-res in OS 4.1, using Font Bucket, (need to get some larger fonts, man!), but in my custom view, where on the right side of the screen I have enabled the "link arrow column", the "ToDo link column" and the "Days until due column", the "Days until due" font, which is much larger than the ones I've chosen in Font Bucket, takes over that part of the screen. Of course, unchecking the "hi-res" option in the global preferences provides more screen "real estate" for these 3 columns, but you loose the small font and more-info-on-the-screen-at-one-time benefit. Is there any way to have both small highres-assisted fonts and proper spacing + a proper "days until due" font?
2] Can the color or saturation of the purple-y row shading that works in hi-res be adjusted or controlled?
Hope you're finally doing some weekend chillin...

Hi,
I've just moved over to Shadow, running it on a Tungsten T - great to see support for this device!
I'd like to suggest the addition of a secondary data field which can be displayed as a column. This is the primary feature I miss when using shadow instead of Listmaker. No fixed format for the data - just text.
Of course, the real winner would be if these child data fields were auto-summed into the parent field like the progress bars. This would be excellent for planning projects, totalling hours, parts, weights etc.
Tags are nice, but sometimes a little unplanned text is useful!

Anthony Royle

2.6 was mostly a desktop update, and as such the Desktop Ref was
updated for it instead of Ref Guide (which is for the handheld side).
The lastsync.txt will always be undocumented and totally subject
to changes (ie: It is 3/4 different from the previous version). It is for
me to assist debugging.. it is cryptic and contains all kinds of stuff
only developers would follow. Besides, often things it says may look funny
but are entirely cool in the situation.. so I wouldn't watch it too
carefully ;)

Days until due uses the wrong font, then? That would be a bug, so
I'll have to fix it :) (ie: everything should use the selected font)

Not yet; I need to add a theming system, due to the wide variety
of screen technologies making it impossible to have a "canned" one.

I'm thinking along the lines of functgions.. like "@SUM" in the
parent field and he gets the sum of all his children's misc-fields.. or
something.

Its how the auto-start feature works; What happens is that when
you hit an alphabetic character, Shadow opens the detail view for a new
item, and then pushes the key again for you. Since I'm pushing the key
virtually as if you'd pushed it yourself, I'd have thought WordComplete
would have worked okay. I'm not sure theres much I can do.
Others have used WC.. I thought it worked fine in the past?

If you mean is the problem caused by Newpen.. No - the behaviour is
identical even with Newpen disabled. It is even the same with Newpen

If you meant what is Newpen.. have a look at

Suggestions for Shadow Desktop "Save As HTML file (*.htm)":
1) Make the exported file XHTML-compliant (this is not difficult, but
I would be happy to edit the source code for you if you want help),
2) convert left "<" and right ">" angle brackets to < and >,
3) change "Note" notation to something other than left and right angle
brackets, such as "(Note: ... )" or "[Note: ... ]" or simply "[ ...

4) allow file extension to be "html" (and preferably, make this the
default).

Jeff (and ShadowPlan community),
A couple of suggestions/requests:
1) When selecting a "ShadP-xxxxxx" file to open, can that selection
window open up as a default showing all files or, alternately, at max
size? I always have to resize the window to see all my files.
2)In the list edit window, can the left window word-wrap text? I have
a few lists with a lot of text for each item. Gets a little tough to
see all of it.
Thanks for your consideration on these items.

One other fact is that I have almost all the items on the Palm linked

No Joy. I deleted the old file off the desk top (renamed it
actually). Set Hot Sync for Palm to overwrite desk top. Opened the
newley copied file and made a change. Synced. No change on Palm.
The Palm to DT is fine, I just can't go the other way.

If an item is linked to ToDo or Datebook, you likely have to
change it in Palm Desktop or Outlok, as those systems sync "later", and
thus take over the value. Its somethign we have to look into.. when we're
fighting with other apps, it gets messy :/

For those of you like me, that loved and depended on MiddleCapsHack, here is a replacement...freeware btw...and yes, I went to PalmGear.com. :(
Info:
"Application Description:
With the release of Palm OS 5 many of the beloved Hacks no longer function - even with the efforts of the guys at Tealpoint.
My personal favorite hack was MiddleCapsHack - super simple, and very useful.
To this end I've created an OS5 replacement for MiddleCapsHack using the new OS5 notification system.
I hope you enjoy it!
Once you have installed CrossingOver you'll be able to use it straight-away - there is nothing to configure. Whenever you want an uppercase character simply write it so that the stroke crosses over (get it?!) the boundary between the alpha and numeric sections of the Graffiti pad. Easy.
Note: This software is only for Palm OS 5 devices.
I'M GETTING REPORTS THAT IT DOESN"T WORK ON CLIE NX DEVICES. IT WORKS GREAT IN THE SIMULATOR SO WILL HAVE TO TRY AND FIND SOMEONE NEARBY WITH AN NX TO DO MORE TESTING. SORRY.
NOTE: If you install CrossingOver via email/web direct to your Palm device you will need to perform a soft reset for CrossingOver to complete it's installation. This IS NOT REQUIRED if you use HotSync to install it."
Enjoy,

Jeff,
Love the Handera support in 2.6.7. It would be nice if you could
support all the native Handera fonts without using Font Bucket.
Actually Font Bucket works very well in hires but Shadow is the only
app I have that uses it so it would be nice to not carry around the
extra 1-200k of memory.
One change I really would like to see is to scale the C/F/V menu
buttons up when in hires so that they remain the same size on the
screen as they are in lores. They're small enough to begin with and
in hires they get extremely tough to select.
Thanks again.

We're currently limited by the OS; I will be writing a new
Shadow-like widget for the left panel so you'll eventually get all the
functionality you're hoping for. I definitely need to get word wrap,
formatting, item types, filtering, etc, in place.

Not for awhile, sorry :( Its a reasonably low request item
compared to a few other things I'm working on. Its also a little tougher
due to how we optimize.. we keep things fast by doing a lot of caching and
moving things around and continual optimization (Shadow can run fast even
with giant files).. however, havign a few really large notes seriously
impacts performance, so we've not allowed it. Its something I'd like to
get to, but I'm afraid I wont' get to it in the next little while :(

Shadow Desktop makes use of some tools to get printing done, and
those tools aren't very international aware. You can do a "save as" HTML
and then print the HTML to achieve similar results.. however I do intend
on fixing up the international printing. Lots to do, and I'm working on it

Interesting, as I LOVE Launcher X and am more than happy to junk Megalauncher with its huge bloat on my RAM. As for the Shadow icon in Launcher X, i don't mind it (stands out from the others) and think it now looks more like a shadow (i actually thought it was intentionally looking that way as developed by Jeff)! The mention of other programs doing this, I haven't seen any others on my machine that is loaded with programs. To each his/her own, but to save LOTS of RAM, check out Launcher X. My thoughts.

In coming to Shadow's defense, it's not the only program that does this in LX. I installed LX for a day, and saw several other icons that looked pretty messed up. Not for this reason, but I'm sticking with ML. LX is a yawn at best.

The new program icon for Shadow 2.6.7 isn't displayed right in
LauncherX (htttp://www.launcherx.com). The icon looks
polarized, it's mostly dark. It's the only program icon that doesn't
show up right in LauncherX.

I have to agree with Kevin, I'm quite liking Launcher X. Mega
launcher was too much of things I didn't need or use and too big.
Anyway, since this a Shadow list I will mention that on my Handera
the icon shows up fine in both small and large view...hey cool
something that works in the Handera first :-)

in Launcher X, i don't mind it (stands out from the others) and think
it now looks more like a shadow (i actually thought it was
intentionally looking that way as developed by Jeff)! The mention of
other programs doing this, I haven't seen any others on my machine
that is loaded with programs. To each his/her own, but to save LOTS
of RAM, check out Launcher X. My thoughts.

One other person noticed this; I took a look and suer enough its
true. I'm not sure if its Launcher X's fault or mine.. ie: The icon shows
up correct in the built in launcher and other launchers.. which would
suggest the problem is Launcher X. But its hard to say. I'm hoping Benc
takes a peek and lets us know ;)

It sounds like it could be in the Active Skin seeing as it's
different depending on the type of unit you have. That might explain
why it shows fine on the Handera but not on other models.

As a note, I have the Tungsten and looked again. It appears correct, the outline of a black box, blue inside that, with a black outline type paper with white scribbles across it...dark, like the website, shadow-like. Isn't this the way it is supposed to look? Very cool look in my opinion.

Kevin,
I hadn't thought of it as looking like the website, but now that you
mention it, it does. Exit LauncherX and you'll see what it is
suppose to look like. Since I'm using a Tungsten as well, it seems
that the effect is a result of using LauncherX on OS 5. Regardless
of the icon, I'm happy with the high resolution in this version.
Thanks Jeff.

Its actually a little weirder than that; There aer two "normal"
icons.. a normal square one, and a "tiny" one for list view. Handera adds
a 1.5 scaled one, and Clie adds a 2.0 scaled one. Palm adds a high density
one (simialr to the Clie one). So the one in question here is the high
density one.. the others are all okay.
I liked MegaLauncher.. it worked, and it was fast. Most important
is a launcher that is fast. I also liked having small icons and the skins.
LauncherX seems pretty good overall, but not as big as it wanted to be (or
was hyped to be), and isn't as fast as L3 or ML. Since ML doesn't yet work
on OS5, I've moved to LX myself. LX is ncie and clean though, which is
nice.. it didn't get big and awful, and it looks really sharp and is
nicely designed. Kudos to Mr. Benc :)

OK... understood... A workaround which at least lets me get the

He has to fix it; if everyone liked an new dark icon, I could
change it. A bug should be fixed, and it should show the icons as they
are intended (ie: This one is mostly white, not black :) Especially a bug
which impares a primary function of the application..

Hey Jeff,
Did you happen to fix the file corruption issues with copy-and-paste

Also, thanks so much for the new Desktop- being able to

Hi Jeff,
I searched the message archives and found your post regarding
erroneous extra characters, so I'll test it myself. Thanks!!
If there's anything I should be aware of let me know, otherwise I
should be good to go.
I'll post back if anything weird happens.

I'll have to make a screenshot.. its a blue circle background,
with a black frame on an angle as paper (white paper, black edge). Theres
black writing on it (angled lines), with two black or blue circles.. so it
looks similar to other Palm OS icons. It doesn't look all black, unless
you're using Launcher X :) (It sort of looks like it used to, but higher

If I jump from a ToDo to SP, MWs 'back' function doesn't work. It
seems that shadowlink isn't adding the jump to MWs history (I assume
thats whats how MW knows the back/forth jumps).
Is there a way to use back/forward with shadowlink?
(The link is deliberatly severed so I can't use SPs link arrow to get
back. I also am just used to jumping around with MWs back/forth).
Sorry if this has already been posted - I couldn't find anything on this.
