Jeff,
I just downloaded Shadow 2.6b5. I have two lists that I am working
with. Regardless of which list I'm using, whenever I try to open
the "Preferences" (List > Preferences), I get a Fatal Alert Message
that says "Category.c, Line:528, Bad Category". There is also
a "Reset" button at the bottom of the Fatal Alert window that I have
to hit which then, obviously, performs a soft reset on my Sony Clie
T665. I was doing a lot of work with these lists last night and did
not have this problem. Can you tell what might be causing this?

Jeff,
The new desktop stuff seemed to be working well in the beta1 I have
been using. However, I just instaffed the beta5 and, checking my
custom settings in the HotSync Manager, I discovered I now have two
ShadowPlan sync conduits. I don't know if that just happened or if it
happended with beta1.

In the file selection screen, on the right side, is the file
operations popmenu; tap it for this file, and pick Category, and set a
category. When certain things occur, the OS can forget the category and it
can confuse a coulpe of things. I'll be fixing that later.

Not sure. It seems to be very rare, but a category can get
forgotten for a file (it si not even in Unfiled, it just not categorized
:)
You can force it to happen by making a new file on the desktop,
sending it up to the handheld, and it will not yet have a category until
you've opened and closed it on the handheld. But that shoudln't be too
common. *Shrug*

Jeff, I also just noticed that when I delete an item in the desktop,
the Shadow "home" window is forced to the top along with the dialog
box. I don't believe this used to happen. I know I deleted a couple
of items yesterday (using beta1) and it did not occur. This little
glitch happened using the latest beta5 stuff after using the install.

I'll see if theres anything I can do easily withuot riskign
retesting the whole shbang. If not, I'll let it out as a public release as
is, but follow up with incremental updates fast. (ie: I dont' want to
delay release another month, but when the public release goes out and I
have to to fling alphas aruond again, we can do all the fun stuff :)

Its a non-issue. It resolves itself and is supposed to
happen. (ie: Since you ca nove move Shadow to memory stick or VFS or the
like, the conduit had to change a little. You briefly see two conduits,
but the old one goes away on its own after yuo restart hotsync manager
after a sync, and it never sycns twice. So this is all by design :)

The Handheld appear to be working fine but when I try to use the desktop
to enter data using New File, Shadow has to close due to an error.
Shadow on desktop (1.2.3) allows me to modify existing files. If I use
the child icon I get an error message telling me to add a main issue but
if I do that a fatal error occurs and the program closes.
I am using a Dell Notebook running Windows 2K Pro which is not behaving
well since I installed Service Pack 3 so it may be that. I have not
been able to locate the error message Windows claimed to generate. Can
anyone suggest where to find it?
Dr Watson show Exception number: c0000005 (access violation) and lots
more, which I will send to Jeff if asked.
I will experiment further but am away for a day or two so am reporting
now.
Great Program Jeff.

I've been getting an annoying fatal alert as follows:
MemoryMgr.c, Line: 4365, NULL handle
It seems to happen when I close a list or exit SP after I have moved a
particular item in the list and changed the todo category link. The only
difference between this item and other items in the list is that I have
copied it from another item and changed part of the description. At least,
I think that this is what is causing it as the item has a severed link after
the reset.
Having said that, I have tried to reproduce the error but it wasn't being
co-operative.

Just a couple of small things that you might already be aware of:
Print Preview: the page count at the bottom left hand corner of the screen
shows xx of 999. Also, I found that when I first open the print preview and
expand the window to full size, the screen doesn't refresh properly.
Mouse Pointer: the mouse pointer, if it crosses the main window of a list
to the memo section changes to <-> and stays like that untill another action
is performed eg. type something or move the cursor outside of the window.
I love the print preview :)

This is supposed to happen. It'll go away on its own once you
restart your machine or hotsync manager, and have synced once with the new
conduit.

The manual recommends incremental upgrades between major releases.
I want to install 2.6. Beta 5 (from the desktop group) ... I currently
have 2.2.1.
Presumably I should install 2.3.x, then 2.4.x then 2.5.x and run and
register each one before I install 2.6.
The shadow web site only has the 2.5 release and this groups
files section (RELEASES) only has 1.5.6 and 1.5.14.
Any ideas where I can obtain the others (2.3 & 2.4)?
Thanks.

4.1 on T615, but if it's rare, don't worry about it, as soon as the

Datebook-type gotos shoudl work fine, as should ToDo-type gotos. I
think Address gotos may crash or may go a random todo/datebook item (their
bad). TD and DB gotos should work fine, as we've reverse engineered that
much and no one has had problems in years, I think. If there have been
issues, let me know! (and let Iambic know, they're twits sometimes :/)

You never need to re-enter registration codes, unless it becomes
unregistered. Going from 2.2 to 2.5 should work okay, but with such a
large jump you may need to re-enter the code. However, going 2.2 to 2.3 to
2.4 you'd probably not need to enter a code, as it should be picked up as
it goes.
I'd try 2.2 to 2.5; it should be fine. If needed, I've got all the
releases so we can rewind as necessary, but all Shadows know how to read
all previous Shadows data formats and things, so you needn't worry too
much. I'd just run the installer and go with it. Going from 1.0 to 2.5
would be nasty maybe, but 2.2 isn't so far back.

Subject: 2 or 3 little things
|

Hello
Just thought I would throw in 2 or 3 little featurette requests, who
knows maybe they can make it in Rel. 2.6?...
1) Shortcuts:
a shortcut on "Zoom inside level" would be great. It can only be
reached by Menu (also the 'v' button, but that's impractical
somehow... too many things in there). what about "/ Z" which is not
used yet?
Also a shortcut for List Preferences would be very useful, this
command is actually used quite frequently (at least I do)
2) "IN" list
Many of us like to use a SP list as an inbox "on the fly" during the
day, leaving the categorizing / sorting for later, when you have time
for planning: this inbox gets really useful only if it's VERY quickly
reached: a good way would be a HW button within Shadow that would
open a specific list: HW button to open SP, same HW button to open my
IN list: a "double-click", you can't get faster that that.
Heck, I think I would even give up the "recent files" function by HW
button (although I use it all the time) in favour of that. Or maybe
it could become an option (either Recent files or Inbox opening? Or
have it only active from the Files selection screen, coupled with an
option to close the list you are on exiting SP? These are only
suggestions, I'm sure Jeff could come up whith much cleverer ways to
do this..
3) Sony Hi-Res
What's the status on col-bg and hi-res? The last I read on the list
(and that's what I can see on my T615) is that col-bg only works in
SP mixed hi-res mode. I don't like this mode because the "twisties"
get much too small, so I must give up on col-bg for the moment, which
is really too bad cause it's great... Will there be a change in rel.
2.6 on that?
Thanks in advance for your reply, and looking forward on the enhanced
Desktop!

2.6 is on target for release in a few days, so nothing will change
in it unless some nasty horrible bug gets reveasled in the public
beta. Anything new will go into 2.7..

We'd need a shortcut for zoom out, too :/

Its possible; Recent Files is pretty good at its job. Taking over
hardkeys is amazingly uncool (since maybe you want to go the Datebook ;),
even when you set up a pref to enable it or disable it. You could use any
of a number of Megawiki type hacks to jump to a specific file. I coudl
build something in, to make table of contents type files more useful, but
I'm not sure hardkeys aer the way to go?

col-bg is disabled in highres assist because of a bug in the sony
OS that crashes the unit. Theres nothing I can do abuot it.. bug sony to
fix it :) Its been in all their Clies, and they know about it :/
Gotta run.. sorry for the quick reply!

Jeff,
Well the suggestions are coming fast and furious aren't they? No rest
for the developer!!
The one I have at the moment is a little one (I think). I would like
to see the tap zones for the filter manager changed from (left to
right) "done", "apply", "describe" to "apply", "cancel", "describe".
I don't know how many countless times I have gone in there, picked my
filter criterion, and then hit "done" on my way out, resulting in no
action. It seems intuitive to me that the most likely thing, if
someone goes into filter manager, is to apply it, secondarily
canceling out because they realize they don't want to be in there.

I love the new drag & drop, move and promote/demote features in the
desktop application. Those were the once I was really waiting for
before I would start using the desktop.
I do have one complaint/wish (depending on how you look at it :)).
When I drag an item (A) on top of another one (B), A ends up as a
sibling of B while I would intuitively have expected to get A as a
child of B. This is how most (if not all) Windows applications work.
For example, when I drag a folder on top of another in Windows
Explorer, that folder ends up inside of the other, not on the same
level.
You probably designed it this way because it's closest to how the
handheld application works and because it allows for changing the
order of items. Still I feel that deviating from an established UI
paradigm almost always leads to user error and confusion.
In other words: what does it take to make you rethink this
decision? :)
(if this design is the result of consensus from a previous
vote/discussion, I'll consider myself outnumbered)
Roy.

It is this way for consistency with other similar dialogs that
have been in the system for awhile. (ie: Notice how all the Manager type
dialogs look and work more or less alike?)

How would you drop it off as a sibling then?
In the widgets supported by the OS (and the other platform's OSes
too) you can only have one drop point.. so it would have to be child, or
sibling, and not deterministic like Shadow does now. So to be safe I chose
sibling, since it makes rearrangement very easy.
I will be building a new widget that is like the handheld list
window, so we'll get a similar (and better) drag and drop system then..

Gotcha ;) What does Explorer do when you drag a normal file near
another file? It lets you re-order them. It only drops inside when youre'
dropping on a folder.. another "type" of object entirely. Besides, Windows
Explorer is for Windows users moving files.. you're moving items around in
an outliner.. an entirely different thing :)
Hows about we change it later or.... see how it goes and see how
long till I make a new view widget ;)

|

Every time I download a new Beta my level numbering
preferences screw up on the few lists I am
synchronizing to the desktop. For example, I start
with a 4-level outline. Able to set the first three
levels in list preferences. However after upgrading
to Beta 5 Level 3 showed no numbering--but the
preference is still there and the number will show up
after I open each entry. Level 4 had to have the
numbering set by item, and most (but not all) of those
entries lost their designation and changed to no
number.
I also ended up with two Shadow conduits, as some
other people did.

I agree, that would be sooooo cool to have colors for each tag! And I did check out the "Agendus" desktop and think it is much cooler than Palm Desktop. If I could only set a reminder so many days ahead that would show up every day until, as in Datebk. LOVE the reminders ahead of event...!

A couple of things on the latest beta on the handheld (m505 with OS 4.0)
Cosmetic — my longest titles (on open lists) are overlapped by the
copy/filter/view buttons at the right end.
Tasklist — If I change a list from any other type to tasklist, the
progress bars on those parents with children initially show 100%
complete instead of 0% or partially complete. Checking and unchecking an
item will reset the progress bar to the proper level.
The conduit works great for me, and the desktop is getting there! I had
avoided syncing anything to the desktop prior to the most recent betas
because the process would usually hang my hotsyncs. Seems to be working
flawlessly for me now. And I love being able to easily run Shadow from
my card.
Thanks, Jeff!

The conduit sync autonumbers fine; it was discovered days ago that
the handheld application could remove auto-numbers beyond level 3 by using
List Preferences, and this is fixed in the handheld application contained
in beta 5. The conduit hasn't ever lost auto-numbers, so somethign funny
must be up. New items from the desktop may not have autonumbering yet
applied, as the desktop application doesn't yet understand numbering, but
the conduit does so it syncs them fine and never loses any. Soon the
desktop will understand them too. So right now you should only see items
missing autonumbering that come new from the desktop...
> I also ended up with two Shadow conduits, as some other people did.
That is normal for this release; the old one goes away once you've
synced and rebooted.

Sweet, thanks for the feedback. I just don't "rock the boat" when
I want to get something good and useful out to everyone. Once this goes

Yeah; I've thought about truncating the filename in the list title
to avoid this, but letting the buttons show-over seems to work well enough
and let you see some of the lisrt name underneath. *shrug* :)

Great :) Running from card is handy.. I think as time goes on,
applications get larger, especially with super powered OS5 machines
coming. So we need every drop of memory we can spare :)

my contacts *AND* my reading glasses, LOL :^)
Another thing I am as pleased as punch about is the
fact that all my old files that kept crasing my prism
before the new conduit came out will now operate fine
when I drag them from their resting place on my hard
drive to the active shadow 160 folder. How
wonderful!!!

Subject: Help Exporting DOC - where does it go?
|
| |
First, let me say that this is a great product! I evaluated several
other alternatives but found this to be the most robust. I've only
been using it for a few days but am already very pleased and see how
it will be a productivity-booster.
My question is about exporting to DOC format. After I make the
selections (Transfer/Export to DOC/select a format and click on OK)
and HotSync, what should happen? I can't find the DOC file anywhere
on my laptop.
I've seen some discussion here on the topic, but couldn't really make
sense out of it. I'm assuming I don't have to purchase another
product (e.g., WordSmith) to make this work. Thanks in advance for
your help!

Well, if no one else has this problem, maybe its best that I
reprogram my brain rather than you reprogram ShadowPlan.

OKay. We'll worry about refinements in a few days after 2.6 goes
out the door. You're wanting a right-click context menu or somesuch?

Categories are "iffy" in Hotsync Manager; for Shadow, if you've
got your old unit and a file manager app, you can beam over yuor
"ShadCat" file (hidden) to get your categories back.

The col-bg crash stopped happening a long long time ago :) (We
figured out it was high res assist crashing and not Shadow, and so when
high res assist is active, col-bg is suppressed. So when in low res or
high res, you get col-bg but not in high res assist mode. Sony's bad)

You can get other font choices :) (ie: You set to use the Palm
"Large" font which looks pretty nice on the highres mode, or you can use
Font Bucket or FontHack to get alternate font sizes and shapes)

Be sure to take a peek in shadow-tips; some good ideas people have
posted there!

It is a Palm DOC file, not a MSWord DOC file :) If you've got a
DOC reader (like WordSmith, Qvadis, PalmDOC, HandStory, you name it,
theres hundreds) you'll be able to see and use i. It'll be in the "normal
places" for DOCs on your desktop, and if you want to get an MSWord DOC out
of it, you'll need something like WordSmith or Docs2Go or the like, I
imagine. Maybe isilo or the like can do that as well. I don't use DOCs
myself, so I cannot advise overly well.

It works fine; it writes to a Palm DOC file for you to use with
DOC readers :)
There are some tools (free and shareware) which can read DOC files
right on the PC. ie: When Hotsync Manager syncs, it'll back up the DOC
file to a "PDB" (Palm Database file) on the PC. You generally dont' touch
these yourself, but there are some applications which can read/write Palm
DOC files contained in PDBs.
Hopefully someone who does this can shed some light on good 3rd
party tools.

I had the issue for awhile too, as older Shadows had an OK on the
left button, and it now moved over. So it took me a few taps before I got
used to it. Sorry about that.

Herb, check out Palm Reader Pro and HandStory, as I have and use both, with HandStory allowing you more options for other uses as well. The little bit extra for a good reader is worth it for the long run!

Jeff,
Crash is solved regarding new items in an empty list in the DT.
The behaviour of only checked items or only finish date set items in
the DT continues.
After syncing the view in the HH showed the same pattern as I
reported.

As an ex-Psion user, something I miss, is the ability to transfer the
clipboard between had-held and Windows. With the Psion sync software
you were able to Cut something from Windows, and then Paste it into
the hand-held. You could also do the reverse.
Very handy - never seen its equivalent on the Palm... unless you guys
know different.
A feature for the 2.7 conduit perhaps?

Was the Psion connected to the PC in real time? (ie: hitting copy
on the Psion, and Paste on the PC.. that suggests the clipboard was
available *immediately* on the other side). Or did you hit Sync of some
sort in between, so its really a much delayed sort of clipboard?
That sort of thing is possible, but I would imagine it would be
way way down the priority list for most people.
Sounds like it would be easily simulated though..
1) Keep a Shadow file called "Clipboard".
2) In Shadow, "cut" a few items (multiclip, whatever), and then do
a "Send to file" from the clipboard, sending the contents to your file
called Clipboard
3) Sync
4) On the desktop, open your clipboard file, Cut the items
5) Paste them into the docuemnt in question
Of course, Shadow Desktop 1.2.5 doesn't have a item clipboard yet,
but it will soon.

Jeff, it would super, super cool if Shadow can designate a font

look something like this:
List Fonts
Level 1: Arial Bold 22
Level 2: Times New Roman 14
Level 3: Palm OS 8
Just an idea to make this app even better and more flexible.

We'll see; I intend on adding some font supoprt in a bit so peopel
can adjust the sizing and stuff to make it easier on the ol' eyes. Doing
it by level.. depends how the OS feels about that (and the other
platforms). I'm hoping to redo the whole left panel widget to be

Not so much with the current behaviour, ie unzoom automatically
before exiting. Usually you zoom into a sublevel cause you are only
interested in that part of your file for the time being, and
presumably for the whole "Shadow session". Next time it can be
different. So the "unzoom on exit" is a good thing.

Well... change auto-numbering, or enabling titlebar, enabling sync
(hotsync takes too long if you enable all lists to get synced by
default), or sometime just checking the custom list options (granted,
this one is now easily done with the view manager)

I agree that taking over hardkey is pretty heavy, but a Megawiki-type
hack is only half as useful: you would have to put hyperlinks to
your "Inbox" list all over the place, wouldn't you? The idea is to be
able to jump to a specific file from _anywhere_ within SP
