My Visor Deluxe does the same even with all hacks deactivated.

The problem was caused by inappropriate data (maybe: too long fields)
in the standard Adress application, which I'm using as a database
with non-standard fields. I rearranged the data and everything is
fine now. What relationship there is with Shadow ,only Jeff could
possibly know.

As for the exception when tapping the "adjust contrast" spot, it's
just a matter of adjusting to it; minor inconvenience.

Let's get back to work.

If it asks you and you do the memory clear, then *everything* is
gone, for sure. If stuff didnt' vanish, then it didnt' go through.

I think one of the alphas had this problem; go to the Help menu,
and hit About, and see what version it says in the corner.

Eep! Which Shadow version? Which OS version?

Perhaps theres a visor issue here. HS did some sneaky stuff with
the OS that sometimes shows up.. but I'm surprised this got through!

Jeff,
Could this have something to do with your Hi-res support? The reason
I ask is that on my Clie T415 SP 2.5, when I click on the contrast
button in SP I get the nice knurled slider, but no indication of the
contrast bar, just the "i" icon at either end. In all other apps a
low-res contrast bar will show up. On the hi-res version of the
original launcher, a hi-res contrast bar is displayed. The problem in
the alpha was the slider indicator being replaced by an "i". Hope
this helps.

Scott

Whackystrange. I shall have to investigate. The "(i)" is an icon
of mine, with a certain resource ID. Obviously the OS uses that resource
ID for the contrast and brightness windows on some units. It woudl be
really nice if there was a document somewhere listing off what resource
numbers not to use :/ (and if it exists, I've overlooked it. Regardless,
the resource number for "(i)" icon of mine is smack in the middle of a
useful range...)

	*sigh* :)

	It never ends... :)

I started getting this with a visor 3.1h - ad it went away when I
defied a application (datebk5) as the todo application. Previously it

Gilles,

I had a recurrent Fatal Exception / Fatal Error also on my Visor Deluxe
when using Shadow with version 2.0. Jeff could not duplicate it, and for
me it seemed to occur whenever using "show unchecked items" in the
filters, on any list at all.

Thankfully it went away when I installed 2.0.9 - I am now using 2.5.0
and have had no further problems.

You might try reinstalling Shadow if you have not. I believe there was
one other person who mentioned a similar problem on their Visor.

Very frustrating, I know.

I am able to create a Fatal Exception at will by pushing the page
down button on my Visor Platinum while I'm on the main screen. SP2.5
installed and still happens with all hacks disabled. Also, doesn't
matter how SP is opened or how long I've been working in it.

Haven't tried yet with all Hacks and DAs deleted, but I will give
that a shot this evening.

Hope we can get this knocked out soon!

My Visor Deluxe does the same even with all hacks deactivated.

you are right. I've been using FPS/Windows. It is buggy enough. The
FPS/Palm is more horrible. I have to prioritize daily on PC and sync
the result to Palm. At home, I can't sync any more because syncing
FPS on two PCs will make it crazy (duplicate records all over).

Even the FPS Application Schedular can only view the PTDL (the FPS to
do list). They cannot "remotely" check items, or jump to particular
items (not even jump to items of the correct day!).

The only good thing about PTDL is the treatment of days. You can
assign tasks to a future day, and it won't appear until that day. I
haven't seen this simple but important feature in other todo lists.
Everybody seems to think that todos are timeless. I am new to SP, but
I think it can be done with SP filters.

You can do this easily with DateBk5 (or 4, or 3), or any number of other
ToDO programs. Using the FC method with Shadowplan + DateBk5 works pretty
well - use Shadowplan for your Master Lists.. In fact, everything but daily
ToDos. Then link to DateBk5

Works a charm, and doesnt crash all the time :)

I've noticed something on 2.5 which I can't recall being there
before. It may have been and I haven't noticed - I've started to use
Shadow a bit more heavily in recent weeks.

For a tasklist item the priority is displayed to the left of the
item, but when the item is changed to a checklist the priority is not
displayed. I find this a little frustrating, since I need to change
items to tasks to see the priority when they don't need to be taks -

From the Reference Guide:

"List Type
Each Shadow list has a view type associated to it. Don't worry, you can
change the type anytime you like. The type is just a general description
which tells Shadow how to display the information you're storing in it. A
file can be a Checklist (with checkboxes), a Memo (without any
decorations), a Tasklist (with Priorities, Checkboxes, Progress Bars,
Dates, etc), a Flat list (no indentation, but with a todo link checkbox for
faster todo linking), or a Custom view (where you can turn on or off any
feature you like!) You can pull up List Preferences from within a list and
change its view type at any time. You never lose any information .. you
just change how it is presented."

If you like the Tasklist view use it. If you want Checklist view with just
the Priority added, make a custom item type or custom view. 2.5 is
extremely flexible in its presentation. Hope this helps.

I think many ToDo apps can do it; Shadow certainly can using
filters, custom or built in.

Checklists don't have priority column. If the built ins don't do
it for you, you can construct your own views with whatever columns you
like. (See the Ref Guide). You can use the top-right [V] popmenu to change
list type with 2 taps.

Is it true that the desktop version does not support tags? Seems all
the tags are lost.

Is it safe to edit the records on desktop? When sync back to HH,
would the tags (and other links) survive?

Perhaps he could repost; if not, I'll look around, as I have that

A fellow user has done a very fine job of hacking up the Ref Guide
for MS-Word, including converting the hyper links into in-.doc links,
making a table of contents, removing the images for better compression,
etc etc.

I've set the file up on the website in the downloads section in
case anyone else wants it. Bear in mind you can use it with Docs2Go or
WordSmith or perhaps the DOC tools to convert into a very nice handheld
side manual.

	The downloads page is here:

	See the "alternative formats" entry.

	Kudos to Scott!

Nasty. I'll be investigating and reworking the conduit soon; in
the mean time, the usual fix should work: Find your lastsync.txt (the one
below for instance), and in the same location are your XML files. Move
them somewhere else for safe keeping, and you should be good to go.

I intend on linking to other applications (like diddlebug and DOC
readers, etc). I've just not had time to get to it :/ I've polled people
many times, and in general, almost no one wants a drawing feature
(amazing, I keep wanting it myself!), so I'll definitely be adding

I'm reposting an edited version of Jorge Ledesma's
(jledesma28@y...) original GTD method post (originally posted to
the GTD_Palm Yahoo Group:

Saludos,
Fred.

............ Jorge's original message (sorry for the paraphrasing)
...................
Applications used: DateBk5, ActionNames, Shadow, Mega Wiki, Mega
Launcher,
Crypto Pad, Quick Memo, Bug Me(all shareware except Crypto and
MegaWiki).

All my todo's and appt are handled and sorted thru Shadow, where I
highlight
and filter by priority. My main list is called Main Task List with the
following parents:

* Next Action
* Current Action
* Finance & Bills
* Home & Family
* Physics
* DAT Study Schedule
* Clie & GTD
* General Sometime Maybe
* Master Input Template

Under Next Action, Current Action, F & B, H & F, Cie & GTD I have the
following
  children:
This Week, This Month, This Quarter, all the main setups are under
Custom
(as you know you can change on command) but I re-sort it under the
Note View
or Flat View -- I find it easier on the eyes and I use bullets for
everything.
I highlight priority with the red colors and it just shines thru on my
Clie
  610C.

So my Shadow MTL looks very sharp, I supplement SP with Font Hack with
Lubak's
fonts, amazing, crisp and clear, I use Handera 18B on the standard and
hr standard
with the symbols allocated properly, refer to his site for
instruction, I either
link thru Shadow's link system or MW depending on the situation.

Onto DBK5: DBK5 has some features that are simply incredible -- custom
views,
eg. Birthday, Class Schedule, Dat Study Plan, etc. I have configured
my hard
buttons the following way: the datebook=DBK5, address=ActNms,
todo=Shadow, memo=Quick Memo or Crypto Pad. On DBK5, I use the view that
shows the week, biweekly, and 3-day view as my startup view since I
don't like ActNm's comparable view, grid 1 and grid 2.

I also use the List view all my categories showing for both appts/todos,
all fonts are black and bold, very clear (I use Lubak's OS5 fonts here).
I like Dbk5 month/year views very nice to get a quick glance at things
eg, vacations or whatever you put with bold or big fonts.

From Shadow, let's say I have to input something really quick and I
don't have to time to sort it into the correct list, here comes Master
Input Template: I write it there or sometime if I'm on the go I use Bug
Me with an alarm for a couple hours so I have to time to advance any
ideas or thoughts that I wrote down quickly, works very well because I
don't have to sort immediately; once I have some time I quickly use
Shadow's Multi Clip function to paste where I want eg. Current Action,
this week, this month, this quarter, whatever. When I'm ready to take
action, I move it to Next Action with a set date for a todo or a set
time for an appt./meeting.

If I want to use a memo I use Crypto pad and then store it with Quick
Memo (their newest version imports directly from Crypto or Memo, same
thing, so its got a nice windows interface and its easy to retrieve any
memos, eg. Registration Codes, for all the apps, Personal, Work, School,
you get the picture.

No. just dl'ed MWiki. Diddlebug also support linking to other
applications. Seems both MWiki and Diddlebug requires specific
plugins to make the link. The document is bit heavy. I'd read the
docs and see what it does.

If the drawing can be done inside SP, it is all the better.

Subject: Fonts/font picker

Jeff,
Up til now I have been very happy with the font picker/setup. Been
using Fontbucket and a compact font - everything's great. Then a
couple of days ago I needed to be able to easily read a list as it was
an outline of questions to ask a witness (i'm a lawyer). I then
realized that in order to get that font, I had to go back through the
prefs screen and change my fonts - which of course is a global pref so
it changed all lists. So it took too long to select a font, and
forced me to go through the same process when I wanted a smaller font
on a different list, and back again - etc.

2 alternative requests:

1. Could the font picker be made a list pref so that you could have
different fonts for different lists - as my ability to easily read a
list quickly - (ie giving a speech) vs. desire to cram on other lists
currently makes a global pref difficult.

2. Alternative: Currently there are 2 fonts - normal and bold. Could
there be a third global pref selection - large? Then could the font
display be picked from the menu (ie under edit or tools) much as you
can do in the native palm memo app. I envision a font selection under
the edit menu, that when tapped would let you select normal, bold,
large, which would be the fonts set in the global prefs. This would
allow quick swithces between fonts for different uses if making it a
list pref is too difficult.

That would likely lead to confusion -- ie: People would hate to
have to do it for each and every list. So you'd have to do it globally
anyway, as a default, then override on a list by list basis. So you'd have
global *and* list level font prefs. So far, I've avoided having
conflicting prefs... it confuses peopel and blows up my support inbox :)

Sounds like more what you want is .. "font group a" (defaults),
"font group B", etc, globaly defined, and a list option to pick the font
group. *shrug*. Thats possible, but down the road for sure.

I too experienced this error today. It was a file I was doing a fair
amount of work on and none of my usual tricks worked to recover it. I
tried moving all the files from ShadowPlan160 (minus the .reg file)
and syncing. I returned an older version and synced. I opened the
older version (in both ShadowPlan and in Notepad), edited it, and
then saved it. I removed the file from my handheld with ZCatalog and
synced. No luck!

At this point I have resorted to opening the older version on the
desktop, coping and pasting all the items from the corrupt newer
version to a new file with a slightly different name. This is working
of course. Now I have to recreate the additions I made today.

What's up with this "Bad Load! The list could not be loaded!" message

MegaWiki only needs plugins to create items in other applications - it can
link to items just fine without it... as long as the application supports
Find, properly... Works fine with Shadowplan for me.

It would be nice if the 'rollup' for the date could be
specified to be either the earliest or latest date.
Perhaps that could be added to the poll? Or simply a preference
enabled for it.

Actually Jeff, not that complicated, option 2 was just an easier way
to select which of the already defined fonts would be selected to view
a list. Many apps (ie memopad, doc readers etc.) have a font picker
to allow you to quickly switch between the 3 native fonts. I just
want a quicker picker (oh my, it must be early) so that I could
quickly switch to a large font display - to quickly make the list
easier to read when you are quickly viewing it - ie. giving a speech
(to easily see speaking points), trying to read on the train, etc, and
then switch back to smaller font display when working on your list to
have crammage. Oh well maybe in 3.0.

Since the handheld file is the borked one, you want to keep the
XML files; you can rename or delete it on the handheld, and ask the
desktop to send up its copy, and you're back in business right away.

Didn't you synch recently (ie: The desktop version is out of
date?)

> What's up with this "Bad Load! The list could not be loaded!" message

It can happen during a crashed synch; sadly, there is a pretty
rare crash bug in the conduit which can cause it. That will be fixed in a
little while (very high priority).

Subject: What made you decide?

Hi,

This may seem like a strange question to ask this list.

How did you finally decide on Shadow? What made you say "Yeah this is for me?" I'm normally quite a cheapskate when it comes to buying software and usually use the entire trial period when possible. But I will pay when I feel that something is worth it and useful to me. So far, I have seen some great interaction on this yahoo group and the GTD group from users. I'm trying to implement the GTD philosophy and want desperately to use my Palm to help. I *think* Shadow is what I'm looking for (along with DateBk5, which I've been using for a year now).

I really enjoy when users post how they use their Palm and what software they organize their lives. Some of the setups suggest that people spent quite a few bucks ongetting system to work for them.

Thanks for any thoughts

Subject: Re: shadow and GTD

Thank you for posting this. I didn't initiate this thread, but I too
am seeking something relatively simple. I'm new to Shadow (and still
assessing its suitability for my needs) and have been using LB for
GTD. I need to organize isolated action items, agenda, projects, etc.
and to display next actions by context, ranked by priority and due
date. LB accomplished all this but I found the ranking process to be
not transparent enough (i.e., too cumbersome) and I didn't find the
balancing pie to be useful for my purposes. I recognize that Shadow
is extremely powerful and has much more functionality than I need. I
am trying to avoid increasing complexity further by using multiple
applications as described in this thread. I am really trying to
assess whether there is a relatively simple way to use Shadow as the
single app for my todo/project needs. I would very much appreciate
any help that anyone can provide to get me started that explains a
simple way to structure categories, lists, and tags to accomplish
these goals.
Thanks.
Bill

Subject: Re: What made you decide?

Dennis,
My decision for Shadow was based upon using the "other" outline programs out there previously and becoming very frustrated with their individual limitations. Like Life Balance prioritizing in its way for me, when i may not choose the preferences it chooses, and then taking too much time to figure how to get what it does the way i want. The others either couldn't do what i wanted, made it a pain to enter info, or would not display what i wanted, and no options to do what i wanted. Simply stated, Shadow gives you options for almost everything
