At first I didn't notice, because most of my events and todos do show
up -- but when I looked closer I discovered that some were missing. I
can detect no pattern to which ones are missing and which ones are
present. Also, some events are mysteriously preceded by two high-ASCII
international symbols (letters with diacritical marks, currency
symbols, etc.). Using Shadow 1.5.0 on a Palm V with OS3.1.

reinstalling, and it seemed to solve the problem. But several sessions
later, the problem was occurring again.

When I go to the link menu and press 'add' it begins to show a list of
addresses and then the dreaded words 'fatal error' come up and the visor
needs to be reset. I understand (from reading the manual!!) that a sub-menu
should come up after pressing the 'add' a link button, with a choice of
adding either memos or addresses (as well as an option to choose the default
address/memo programme)? That never appears on my machine. I've disabled all
my hacks and tried, but still no luck. Anyone got any ideas???

After 3 years with Palms, I have recently discovered Shadow & really
like it - it thinks the way I do, and that's quite an achievement!

One question & one problem:

The shortcuts seem counter-intuitive & therefore a bit difficult to
remember. I am using Shadow with a GoType, mostly for note-taking &
so use shortcuts quite a lot. Are there any mnemonics??

Also, I am trying to load the Windows interface, but can't select an
account to install to. Even "select all" still gives me "0 of 0
accounts selected". Any ideas, please?

Keep up the good work!!

Andy

PS I _am_ trying to register, but Handango keeps bouncing my CC
details; never usually a problem.

PPS Why not ask Handango to offer Shadow on their UK expansys site,
as well?

Subject: Severed links

Hi group,

I was playing around with a new security app yesterday and ended up
being locked out of my Palm because of a bug that caused my login
code to be reset. So I had to do a cold reset and restore my device
from a backup.

The restore went fine but had a rather disturbing side-effect: all
the links to ToDo's I had defined in my Shadow lists had become
invalid. The same thing happened with all my links in DateBk4.

I suspect that Shadow (like DateBk4) uses the Unique ID's of ToDo
records to implement its linking mechanism. I am using Desktop To Go
as a conduit between the major Palm databases and Outlook 2000. From
conversations with a Desktop To Go developer it became clear that
under certain circumstances (like a restore after a cold reset) the
original Unique ID's of the Palm databases are not necessarily
retained.

The DateBk4 developer claims that the original Palm Desktop conduits
do preserve Unique ID's at all times but that some third party
conduits do not, and that this is the cause of the lost links. But
the Desktop To Go developer asserts that there is not a single Palm
requirement saying that Unique ID's should be preserved and that
Desktop To Go has received Platinum Certification several times
without any mentioning of this issue.

Given the fact that I'm not the only Desktop To Go user, and probably
also not the only one using Shadow as well, this is a potential
problem for all Shadow (and DateBk4) users with Desktop To Go (and
most likely several other third party conduits).

Has this issue ever been recognized and/or researched? Is there a way
for me to make sure that I don't have to manually recreate all my
links again like I've been doing most of the day today?

Roy.

I've seen a Fatal Error in a similar fashion in version 1.50. I have
a Palm 3x and I use Tealphone for my contacts. I was able to link to
contacts but now the list comes up blank. After numerous attempts at
coming in and out of that window and tapping around within the
window, I received a Fatal Error once, in MemoryMgrNew.c, Line:4257,
Invalid Chunk ptr. I am still able to click on the items with linked
addresses and they come up fine.

I tried to sync my palm to my laptop the other day and ended up with all
of my categories messed up and my palm refused to sync after that. I did a
hard reset and reinstalled from my PC from the palm desktop and all my links
returned in tact in both shadow and datebk4. I use pocket mirror as a
conduit, but I almost always do an extra hotsync to backup to the palm
desktop so that if I ever need to restore from it the links will remain in
tact.

Love 1.5.0. Love the new Linking Manager, the importing from the
To-Do database, etc.

Unfortunately, I'm having all kinds of problems with the new Windoze
conduit :-(

After install, I could no longer complete a Hotsync (it would crash
with an error from the Shadow conduit). Also, I could not change the
Shadow Conduit behavior in the Hotsync "Custom" dialog. (You know,
"Do Nothing", "Synchronize the Files", etc.) Finally, when I tried to
uninstalling Shadow, I got an "Error during Uninstall" message. More
:-( The uninstall did remove the Shadow conduit from the Hotsync
list and now I can 'sync again.

I'm using Win98, a serial cable dock, HotSync 3.1.1, a Palm IIIc and
BackupBuddy 1.31

Anyone else having these kinds of problems?

Pocket Mirror has an option in the user preferences for 'one-time action of
next hotsync'. It's a drop-down menu and one of the options is 'backup to
palm desktop'. I just select that option to backup up to the desktop and
then do another sync after that one to sync with Outlook.

I'm having the same problem. Fatal error at HotSync, can't change the
conduit, etc. However, the uninstall did not remove the conduit, and
I have no way of turning it off or removing it.
I'm using W98, serial cradle, HotSync 3.0.4, Palm IIIc, BB 1.40. Note
that this behavior occurred as soon as I installed 1.5.0, and changed
nothing else in my Palm. Since it appears to be the upgrade, I am
about to try to revert back to 1.4.0, but I am leery about doing so
since I think the conduit may interfere with my 1.4 data.

Help! I used to LOVE Shadow, but this new version is a pain.

OK, I (halfway) lied; trying the uninstall a second time resulted in
the same error, but the conduit is gone now.

I had a similar problem: the hotsync process stopped dead when it
came to Shadow. This was when I had installed the 4.16Beta version
instead of an older version. Chech out messages 353-355 in this
groups discussion. Opening the files, making a small change and
closing them again worked fine for me. I canīt recall all the steps I
had to go through (it took me some time since I think I did a hard

hotsyncproblems you described disappeared!

Desktop To Go also has such an option, but it doesn't need an extra
HotSync. If this option is active, DTG will always make a backup copy
to the Palm Desktop after synchronization.

After a very constructive dialog with one of the Desktop To Go
developers, the latest version (2.509) handles synchronization
between two PC's beautifully now. I can now sync both at home and at
work without any problems.

Except for the uneventful broken link issue that is...

I brought up this issue with the DTG and DateBk4 people as well and
they are now in contact with eachother to (hopefully) find a solution
for this issue. Doing an additional sync to the Palm Desktop is an
option, but I was hoping for a more streamlined solution.

Hi there,

Still can't get the address/memo linking to work. My problem is that the sub-menu (after pressing the 'add' button in the link menu, never appears. Instead, I see (for a brief second) a list of addresses loading, and then the 'fatal exception' screen.
I've disabled all my hacks and tried re-installing the software, but still nothing.

However, I do have one question about the backup files for shadow plan. When I deleted the program from my Visor, all the data was deleted as well. When I reinstalled the program, I went to the shadow plan folder in my palm folder, to reinstall my outlines and I found xml files. Double clicking on these opened my internet browser, but I couldn't read anything except a couple lines of text. Fortunately, I have BackupBuddy so was able to reinstall the outline files from my archived folder.

My question is. If you don't have backupbuddy, will shadowplan backup your data so you can reinstall your outlines in the event of a reset? What are xml files - do they work with a specific windows program. Will I be able to read my outlines on my desktop and edit them?

Just wondering what the point of the windows conduit is?

Yep, I had some list names with invalid Windows characters. I changed
them, resynced, and voila! everything worked! I'll be using 1.5 now,
thanks!

One more thing...did the "tags" Jeff referred to in message 75 as
being planned for 1.5 ever make it into the release? If they did, I
can't find them. Do I need to anticipate them in a future release?

Thanks,

The Shadow databases have their backup bit set so yes, they should
also be backed up by the stock Palm conduit.

> What are xml files - do they work with a specific windows
> program.

They work with all programs that support them. :) XML (eXtensible
Markup Language) is an industry standard, general purpose format for
data exchange between any arbitrary set of applications. XML is not
bound to any platform (Windows, Mac, Palm, cell phone, etc).

Shadow uses XML to store its outlines on the desktop because this
offers an easy way for third party developers to create solutions
that can work with Shadow files.

> Will I be able to read my outlines on my desktop and edit them?

Eventually yes, when Jeff has finished the desktop application.

> Just wondering what the point of the windows conduit is?

As of this moment, it is a one-way conduit, offering the possibility
to any interested parties to access Shadow data through an open file
format. Later versions of Shadow will have a two-way conduit and a
desktop application so that outlines can be created, edited and
deleted on both desktop and handheld.

somewhere. Eventually I'll add some support to hide the DB4 type stuff,
but I'm currently working on Shadow things rather than spending time
working on Shadow's code to support other apps stuff (like Action Names,
DB4, and others..)

I will :) Thanks for the support :)

Trying to link to my address book in 1.5.0 -- incredibly slow finding a name
(must have been almost 5 minutes). It took all my willpower not to reset --
during the find the palm was locked up. I'm using a IIIxe. I probably have
800 names in my address book. This must be a bug?

Been playing with 1.5.0...

Linking to the correct address/name when adding via the link manager seems
to work correctly now
BUT..
I've been getting fatal exceptions when trying to delete links....will
investigate further...

I think checking an item off sets the completion (finish) date in
Shadow. It does not set thje "target" date, and the target date is what is
used in links to ToDo. ToDo only has target date, whereas Shadow has
Target, Start, and Finish .. so thats like your problem.

Check your finish dates (in the detail window I guess, for
now) and let me know if that clears things up. IF you need, let me know,
and I can add an option to allow you to display finish date as a optional
column (like target date)

Can depend on options too, as well as filtering. All the other
items could be filtered out of view, or in 1.5.0 you can turn off some
autochecking..

	I think a few people have built them. I don't have a
"reference" version yet, since the structure is still evolving. Its a
pretty easy one to draft.

Check the shadow-desktop archives; a couple of lads did some
extraordinary work already..

Currently the link is one way; I'm going to be adding a
"back" button to make navigating a little easier; in my own lists, I often
keep a link back myself.. ie: I use a shadow list as a table of contents,
to keep lists hierarchically. Each of the lists has a link to the TOC file
to let me jump back quickly.

But yeah, a "Back" button, and a "Recent Files" listing would be
handy..

Hmm. Try setting the program, and then changing something in the

thereafter. Perhaps setting the program doesn't cause a proper "save" in
some cases.. I shall check.

Getting certification costs money. Its not hard to qualify for
it. They certainly dont' test to that level.

Whethor or not it is correct is the question.. and I'm not
sure. I'd have to check all the standards. Certainly, it is best to
preserve as much as you can, and any conduit not preserving unique-id's
needs work ;)

If desktop to go isn't restoring things right, thats its
fault and nothign we can do about it, besides creating some evil linking
mechanism that woudl be really ugly (like using the note field to store
link information, which woudl be ugly and *incredibly* slow).

> Has this issue ever been recognized and/or researched? Is there a way
> for me to make sure that I don't have to manually recreate all my
> links again like I've been doing most of the day today?

	A good question.

Other questions along the same lines which I've been thinking
about are maintainig links across imports and exports. Very difficult. But
possible..

The short answer is no.. not much you can do. You can have two
identical todos, where the only difference is the unique-id. To link to
it, we must use the unique-id, or we miust create a unique-id system of
our own and stick it in the notes field. But the whole point is not to do
something proprietary like that, and use the built-in one, and leave the
conduits to restore things accurately.

So.. is desktop to go doing the right thing, or the easy thing? I
don't know, either :)

Sorry, 250 emails to go :)

Ugh. No one has reported a problem with 1.5.0 conduit before. What
happened during the hotsync, exactly -- "crash", or just a "Failed" entry
in the hotsync log, or what?

Do you have any really old shadow lists? If so, try opening them,
scrolling them, and closing therm (ie: Causing a save). Also, if you have
any shadow files with very strange filenames, try renaming
them. Sometiumes Windows has a problem with odd filenames, though Shadow
tries to cut out the ugly stuff..

If you cannot uninstall it, then just delete the ShadowPlan.dll

complain, but shoudl stoip a crash. Are you crashign, or just getting a
"failed" entry in the log?

Use 1.5.0, but ditch the conduit. Going back to 1.4.0 is
difficulty.

> Help! I used to LOVE Shadow, but this new version is a pain.

Lets get rid of that conduit. Keep me involved and we'll get you
fixed. If you still have a problem, I'll get you a little command line
tool to remove the conduit forcibly.

Try opening/closing all your lists (after scrolling around, to
make them want to save), and make sure none of the list names have
characters in them that windows would hate.. (like slashes, for instance)

The 1.5.0 conduit should not have those sorts of problems :/
*sigh* :/

Definitely seems like a bug; someone else has mentioned somethign
along these lines, and I've never been able to reproduce it. Does it
happen every time for you, or seemingly at random? Any pattern to it? Does
it only happen with these few files? (And if so, can you send me the
files, knowing I'll purge them after studying the crash?)

I woudl love to find this bug, but its difficult sionce I cannot
see it :/

Does it only happen if the clip is iin "one" or "many" mode?

If you have any halfway recent Hotsync Manager, you shoudl have a
"Backup" folder, which should include your Shadow files in .pdb
format. The ShadowPlan directory contains them in XML format, which will
in a month or tewo allow you to reconstruct the palm-side form them, as
well as edit them on the desktop through various tools, etc.

BackupBuddy is pretty redundant when compared to the newer hotsync
manager. Please confirm, but this is the bahviour I've built into it all..

XML is a industry standard notation system. The shadow files
should load into IE and other XML readers in a non-useful way, but there
are many XML editors which can do really neat things with them. Many
peopel who know the XML tricks can turn their shadow files into HTML pages
in seconds.. very handy! Much more is coming..

(1-3 weeks from now, look for some Windows tools to turn the XML
files into HMTL, RTF, etc).

> Just wondering what the point of the windows conduit is?

Its a first step; it is very useful to many people, and also tests
the foundations for the conduit, and does some backing up of data, and
clearing up junk left on the palm and such. Its not needed, but is very
handy at times,a nd for those XML folks. But in 1-3 weeks it'll get realy
useful :)

Sort of; it works well if you don't have a massive pile of
addresses. If you have >1000 it can get very slow. I may remove the find
widget and replace it with a scroll bar, since its a much faster way to
get around a list. Palms just aren't good at searching like it does now..

A thought - how does CESD do it in Datebook?

Touching the Link button in DateBk4 takes you directly to the list of names,
and a search is executed very quickly (at least compared to 1.5.0).

Tell me how to do it in DB4 and I'll take a look.

He may be depending on certain behaiours Iv'e found not to always
hold. Perhaps they hodl well enough fo DB4, which is plenty good enough
for me ;) (I'm being paanoid right now, and not depending on external
