At first I didn't notice, because most of my events and todos do show
up -- but when I looked closer I discovered that some were missing. I
can detect no pattern to which ones are missing and which ones are
present. Also, some events are mysteriously preceded by two high-ASCII
international symbols (letters with diacritical marks, currency
symbols, etc.). Using Shadow 1.5.0 on a Palm V with OS3.1.

reinstalling, and it seemed to solve the problem. But several sessions
later, the problem was occurring again.

When I go to the link menu and press 'add' it begins to show a list of
addresses and then the dreaded words 'fatal error' come up and the visor
needs to be reset. I understand (from reading the manual!!) that a sub-menu
should come up after pressing the 'add' a link button, with a choice of
adding either memos or addresses (as well as an option to choose the default
address/memo programme)? That never appears on my machine. I've disabled all
my hacks and tried, but still no luck. Anyone got any ideas???

After 3 years with Palms, I have recently discovered Shadow & really
like it - it thinks the way I do, and that's quite an achievement!

One question & one problem:

The shortcuts seem counter-intuitive & therefore a bit difficult to
remember. I am using Shadow with a GoType, mostly for note-taking &
so use shortcuts quite a lot. Are there any mnemonics??

Also, I am trying to load the Windows interface, but can't select an
account to install to. Even "select all" still gives me "0 of 0
accounts selected". Any ideas, please?

Keep up the good work!!

Andy

PS I _am_ trying to register, but Handango keeps bouncing my CC
details; never usually a problem.

PPS Why not ask Handango to offer Shadow on their UK expansys site,
as well?

Subject: Severed links

Hi group,

I was playing around with a new security app yesterday and ended up
being locked out of my Palm because of a bug that caused my login
code to be reset. So I had to do a cold reset and restore my device
from a backup.

The restore went fine but had a rather disturbing side-effect: all
the links to ToDo's I had defined in my Shadow lists had become
invalid. The same thing happened with all my links in DateBk4.

I suspect that Shadow (like DateBk4) uses the Unique ID's of ToDo
records to implement its linking mechanism. I am using Desktop To Go
as a conduit between the major Palm databases and Outlook 2000. From
conversations with a Desktop To Go developer it became clear that
under certain circumstances (like a restore after a cold reset) the
original Unique ID's of the Palm databases are not necessarily
retained.

The DateBk4 developer claims that the original Palm Desktop conduits
do preserve Unique ID's at all times but that some third party
conduits do not, and that this is the cause of the lost links. But
the Desktop To Go developer asserts that there is not a single Palm
requirement saying that Unique ID's should be preserved and that
Desktop To Go has received Platinum Certification several times
without any mentioning of this issue.

Given the fact that I'm not the only Desktop To Go user, and probably
also not the only one using Shadow as well, this is a potential
problem for all Shadow (and DateBk4) users with Desktop To Go (and
most likely several other third party conduits).

Has this issue ever been recognized and/or researched? Is there a way
for me to make sure that I don't have to manually recreate all my
links again like I've been doing most of the day today?

Roy.

I've seen a Fatal Error in a similar fashion in version 1.50. I have
a Palm 3x and I use Tealphone for my contacts. I was able to link to
contacts but now the list comes up blank. After numerous attempts at
coming in and out of that window and tapping around within the
window, I received a Fatal Error once, in MemoryMgrNew.c, Line:4257,
Invalid Chunk ptr. I am still able to click on the items with linked
addresses and they come up fine.

I tried to sync my palm to my laptop the other day and ended up with all
of my categories messed up and my palm refused to sync after that. I did a
hard reset and reinstalled from my PC from the palm desktop and all my links
returned in tact in both shadow and datebk4. I use pocket mirror as a
conduit, but I almost always do an extra hotsync to backup to the palm
desktop so that if I ever need to restore from it the links will remain in
tact.

Love 1.5.0. Love the new Linking Manager, the importing from the
To-Do database, etc.

Unfortunately, I'm having all kinds of problems with the new Windoze
conduit :-(

After install, I could no longer complete a Hotsync (it would crash
with an error from the Shadow conduit). Also, I could not change the
Shadow Conduit behavior in the Hotsync "Custom" dialog. (You know,
"Do Nothing", "Synchronize the Files", etc.) Finally, when I tried to
uninstalling Shadow, I got an "Error during Uninstall" message. More
:-( The uninstall did remove the Shadow conduit from the Hotsync
list and now I can 'sync again.

I'm using Win98, a serial cable dock, HotSync 3.1.1, a Palm IIIc and
BackupBuddy 1.31

Anyone else having these kinds of problems?

Pocket Mirror has an option in the user preferences for 'one-time action of
next hotsync'. It's a drop-down menu and one of the options is 'backup to
palm desktop'. I just select that option to backup up to the desktop and
then do another sync after that one to sync with Outlook.

I'm having the same problem. Fatal error at HotSync, can't change the
conduit, etc. However, the uninstall did not remove the conduit, and
I have no way of turning it off or removing it.
I'm using W98, serial cradle, HotSync 3.0.4, Palm IIIc, BB 1.40. Note
that this behavior occurred as soon as I installed 1.5.0, and changed
nothing else in my Palm. Since it appears to be the upgrade, I am
about to try to revert back to 1.4.0, but I am leery about doing so
since I think the conduit may interfere with my 1.4 data.

Help! I used to LOVE Shadow, but this new version is a pain.

OK, I (halfway) lied; trying the uninstall a second time resulted in
the same error, but the conduit is gone now.

I had a similar problem: the hotsync process stopped dead when it
came to Shadow. This was when I had installed the 4.16Beta version
instead of an older version. Chech out messages 353-355 in this
groups discussion. Opening the files, making a small change and
closing them again worked fine for me. I canīt recall all the steps I
had to go through (it took me some time since I think I did a hard

hotsyncproblems you described disappeared!

Desktop To Go also has such an option, but it doesn't need an extra
HotSync. If this option is active, DTG will always make a backup copy
to the Palm Desktop after synchronization.

After a very constructive dialog with one of the Desktop To Go
developers, the latest version (2.509) handles synchronization
between two PC's beautifully now. I can now sync both at home and at
work without any problems.

Except for the uneventful broken link issue that is...

I brought up this issue with the DTG and DateBk4 people as well and
they are now in contact with eachother to (hopefully) find a solution
for this issue. Doing an additional sync to the Palm Desktop is an
option, but I was hoping for a more streamlined solution.

Hi there,

Still can't get the address/memo linking to work. My problem is that the sub-menu (after pressing the 'add' button in the link menu, never appears. Instead, I see (for a brief second) a list of addresses loading, and then the 'fatal exception' screen.
I've disabled all my hacks and tried re-installing the software, but still nothing.

However, I do have one question about the backup files for shadow plan. When I deleted the program from my Visor, all the data was deleted as well. When I reinstalled the program, I went to the shadow plan folder in my palm folder, to reinstall my outlines and I found xml files. Double clicking on these opened my internet browser, but I couldn't read anything except a couple lines of text. Fortunately, I have BackupBuddy so was able to reinstall the outline files from my archived folder.

My question is. If you don't have backupbuddy, will shadowplan backup your data so you can reinstall your outlines in the event of a reset? What are xml files - do they work with a specific windows program. Will I be able to read my outlines on my desktop and edit them?

Just wondering what the point of the windows conduit is?

Yep, I had some list names with invalid Windows characters. I changed
them, resynced, and voila! everything worked! I'll be using 1.5 now,
thanks!

One more thing...did the "tags" Jeff referred to in message 75 as
being planned for 1.5 ever make it into the release? If they did, I
can't find them. Do I need to anticipate them in a future release?

Thanks,

The Shadow databases have their backup bit set so yes, they should
also be backed up by the stock Palm conduit.

> What are xml files - do they work with a specific windows
> program.

They work with all programs that support them. :) XML (eXtensible
Markup Language) is an industry standard, general purpose format for
data exchange between any arbitrary set of applications. XML is not
bound to any platform (Windows, Mac, Palm, cell phone, etc).

Shadow uses XML to store its outlines on the desktop because this
offers an easy way for third party developers to create solutions
that can work with Shadow files.

> Will I be able to read my outlines on my desktop and edit them?

Eventually yes, when Jeff has finished the desktop application.

> Just wondering what the point of the windows conduit is?

As of this moment, it is a one-way conduit, offering the possibility
to any interested parties to access Shadow data through an open file
format. Later versions of Shadow will have a two-way conduit and a
desktop application so that outlines can be created, edited and
deleted on both desktop and handheld.

somewhere. Eventually I'll add some support to hide the DB4 type stuff,
but I'm currently working on Shadow things rather than spending time
working on Shadow's code to support other apps stuff (like Action Names,
DB4, and others..)

I will :) Thanks for the support :)

Trying to link to my address book in 1.5.0 -- incredibly slow finding a name
(must have been almost 5 minutes). It took all my willpower not to reset --
during the find the palm was locked up. I'm using a IIIxe. I probably have
800 names in my address book. This must be a bug?

Been playing with 1.5.0...

Linking to the correct address/name when adding via the link manager seems
to work correctly now
BUT..
I've been getting fatal exceptions when trying to delete links....will
investigate further...

I think checking an item off sets the completion (finish) date in
Shadow. It does not set thje "target" date, and the target date is what is
used in links to ToDo. ToDo only has target date, whereas Shadow has
Target, Start, and Finish .. so thats like your problem.

Check your finish dates (in the detail window I guess, for
now) and let me know if that clears things up. IF you need, let me know,
and I can add an option to allow you to display finish date as a optional
column (like target date)

Can depend on options too, as well as filtering. All the other
items could be filtered out of view, or in 1.5.0 you can turn off some
autochecking..

	I think a few people have built them. I don't have a
"reference" version yet, since the structure is still evolving. Its a
pretty easy one to draft.

Check the shadow-desktop archives; a couple of lads did some
extraordinary work already..

Currently the link is one way; I'm going to be adding a
"back" button to make navigating a little easier; in my own lists, I often
keep a link back myself.. ie: I use a shadow list as a table of contents,
to keep lists hierarchically. Each of the lists has a link to the TOC file
to let me jump back quickly.

But yeah, a "Back" button, and a "Recent Files" listing would be
handy..

Hmm. Try setting the program, and then changing something in the

thereafter. Perhaps setting the program doesn't cause a proper "save" in
some cases.. I shall check.

Getting certification costs money. Its not hard to qualify for
it. They certainly dont' test to that level.

Whethor or not it is correct is the question.. and I'm not
sure. I'd have to check all the standards. Certainly, it is best to
preserve as much as you can, and any conduit not preserving unique-id's
needs work ;)

If desktop to go isn't restoring things right, thats its
fault and nothign we can do about it, besides creating some evil linking
mechanism that woudl be really ugly (like using the note field to store
link information, which woudl be ugly and *incredibly* slow).

> Has this issue ever been recognized and/or researched? Is there a way
> for me to make sure that I don't have to manually recreate all my
> links again like I've been doing most of the day today?

	A good question.

Other questions along the same lines which I've been thinking
about are maintainig links across imports and exports. Very difficult. But
possible..

The short answer is no.. not much you can do. You can have two
identical todos, where the only difference is the unique-id. To link to
it, we must use the unique-id, or we miust create a unique-id system of
our own and stick it in the notes field. But the whole point is not to do
something proprietary like that, and use the built-in one, and leave the
conduits to restore things accurately.

So.. is desktop to go doing the right thing, or the easy thing? I
don't know, either :)

Sorry, 250 emails to go :)

Ugh. No one has reported a problem with 1.5.0 conduit before. What
happened during the hotsync, exactly -- "crash", or just a "Failed" entry
in the hotsync log, or what?

Do you have any really old shadow lists? If so, try opening them,
scrolling them, and closing therm (ie: Causing a save). Also, if you have
any shadow files with very strange filenames, try renaming
them. Sometiumes Windows has a problem with odd filenames, though Shadow
tries to cut out the ugly stuff..

If you cannot uninstall it, then just delete the ShadowPlan.dll

complain, but shoudl stoip a crash. Are you crashign, or just getting a
"failed" entry in the log?

Use 1.5.0, but ditch the conduit. Going back to 1.4.0 is
difficulty.

> Help! I used to LOVE Shadow, but this new version is a pain.

Lets get rid of that conduit. Keep me involved and we'll get you
fixed. If you still have a problem, I'll get you a little command line
tool to remove the conduit forcibly.

Try opening/closing all your lists (after scrolling around, to
make them want to save), and make sure none of the list names have
characters in them that windows would hate.. (like slashes, for instance)

The 1.5.0 conduit should not have those sorts of problems :/
*sigh* :/

Definitely seems like a bug; someone else has mentioned somethign
along these lines, and I've never been able to reproduce it. Does it
happen every time for you, or seemingly at random? Any pattern to it? Does
it only happen with these few files? (And if so, can you send me the
files, knowing I'll purge them after studying the crash?)

I woudl love to find this bug, but its difficult sionce I cannot
see it :/

Does it only happen if the clip is iin "one" or "many" mode?

If you have any halfway recent Hotsync Manager, you shoudl have a
"Backup" folder, which should include your Shadow files in .pdb
format. The ShadowPlan directory contains them in XML format, which will
in a month or tewo allow you to reconstruct the palm-side form them, as
well as edit them on the desktop through various tools, etc.

BackupBuddy is pretty redundant when compared to the newer hotsync
manager. Please confirm, but this is the bahviour I've built into it all..

XML is a industry standard notation system. The shadow files
should load into IE and other XML readers in a non-useful way, but there
are many XML editors which can do really neat things with them. Many
peopel who know the XML tricks can turn their shadow files into HTML pages
in seconds.. very handy! Much more is coming..

(1-3 weeks from now, look for some Windows tools to turn the XML
files into HMTL, RTF, etc).

> Just wondering what the point of the windows conduit is?

Its a first step; it is very useful to many people, and also tests
the foundations for the conduit, and does some backing up of data, and
clearing up junk left on the palm and such. Its not needed, but is very
handy at times,a nd for those XML folks. But in 1-3 weeks it'll get realy
useful :)

Sort of; it works well if you don't have a massive pile of
addresses. If you have >1000 it can get very slow. I may remove the find
widget and replace it with a scroll bar, since its a much faster way to
get around a list. Palms just aren't good at searching like it does now..

A thought - how does CESD do it in Datebook?

Touching the Link button in DateBk4 takes you directly to the list of names,
and a search is executed very quickly (at least compared to 1.5.0).

Tell me how to do it in DB4 and I'll take a look.

He may be depending on certain behaiours Iv'e found not to always
hold. Perhaps they hodl well enough fo DB4, which is plenty good enough
for me ;) (I'm being paanoid right now, and not depending on external

I'm not sure what you mean by "tell me how to do it." But here goes:

In DB4, create (say) a ToDo.
Highlight the newly-created ToDo.
Touch the Link button on the lower right of the screen (the button with an L
and an arrow on it). That takes you (depending on a preferences setting, I
think) to a contact list. Use Grafitti to enter the first letter of the
name, highlight the name, touch it again and it blinks and is linked to the
ToDo.

Pocket Mirror has an option in the user preferences for 'one-time action of
next hotsync'. It's a drop-down menu and one of the options is 'backup to
palm desktop'. I just select that option to backup up to the desktop and
then do another sync after that one to sync with Outlook.

=====
Pocket Mirror's "backup to 'backup to palm desktop" does not reset Mail,
Expense, or individual conduits for the likes of Avantgo, HanDBase which
have their own conduits. To avoid unnecessarily resyncing these, click on
HotSync in the system tray, select "Custom", double click on these
additional conduits and select "Do Nothing" This will make a one time change
these conduits. Hit the HotSync button and only the Palm Desktop will be
synced.

It seems to be random. I'm using single clip. Sorry, can't send the files
because I've already deleted them. In fact, I reinstalled 1.4.0 ("Oh ye of
little faith" ? - maybe) But no, for me Shadow is the "killer app" on my
Palm, the only sweetener to what is otherwise a vanilla Palm V and the only
piece of shareware I've registered. I've tried a bit of stuff but found it
all pretty ho hum - until Shadow. It replaces what was for me a paper and
pen exercise and now I've thrown the old spiral bound notebook aside.

BTW. Click on the attachment : )

Jeff,

I just got a "broken link" error when I opened a
Shadow file. Any chance of that message being expanded
to tell which item has the broken link?

Keep up the good work, but don't wear yourself out :)

You can install it by hand.. just double-click on the Shadow.prc,
and a properly configured windows palm desktop will pop it into a generic
installer. You just won't get the conduit that way.

Look at the link arrows on the right side of the screen (or if
you've turned that column off, turn it on for the time being). The link
arrow will look like this "--->" sort of; if the item has a broken link,
it will say "-|->" like a little cross cut through it so you know that a
link is broken. Which link will take trying them out -- pop up the list of
links and try doing a goto, and the broken one will pop up saying "I'm
broken! Sever me?"

Any native non-English here? (ie: German, French, etc)

I'm considering working on non-English versions of the
application. (Croatian, German, French, Spanish, maybe the asian
languages, though those are a little beyond me :)

I do not know those languages or the devices from those countries,
though I have carefully made Shadow work well with them.

I need to eventually build a list of people who know these
languages who can loan a hand to translate all of the text. There is quite
a lot of it, too :P They would need to translate all new text, as well, in
upcoming versions.

Do I need to change the text in the dialog boxes, menus, alerts,
and thats about it? Everyone is happy? Or need I change some of the
behaviour to properly localize?

Personally, I've always preferred the English versions of all
software I own, because localized versions are (1) always behind in
development and (2) notoriously difficult to cross reference with
most (English) literature.

Having said that, I'd be happy to help with a Dutch localization
though, should there be a market for it. I should even be able to do
a rough German translation, but if you want it to be flawless, I
suggest you contact a native speaker for that. :)

Depends on how you restore from backup .. A straight palm desktop
ought to do the restore okay (perhaps depending on version?). Some other
systems may or may not do it right. BackupBuddy may restore correctly, but
I've not checked in ages. Its really very system dependant, and I don't
have a list of what things restore 100% versus 99.9% :/ (ie: Some
programs will restore all of your data by "re-creating" it exactly was it
was.. which breaks the link. Other applications will just bring it back,
which does work)

Subject: Re: ToDo Completion Date

There is a difference in what happens depending on if you check off a
ToDo in Shadow or in the ToDo list. Example: I have my ToDo
preferences set to "record completion date". I have 2 ToDos, both are
overdue. If I check off a ToDo in the native ToDo app or in Datebk4,
the target date changes to the completion date. This is the behavior
that I want. In Shadow, the Finish Date is recorded correctly. But
the TARGET date also is changed to the complete date, also. However,
if I check off the item in Shadow, the target date and complete dates
are correct, but my original ToDo does not change the date. So my 2
ToDos have different info, depending on whether I check them in
Shadow or Datebk4. Ideally, I want my target date in the ToDo app (or
datebk4-same issue)to be changed to the completion date (that's the
way it works now) but in Shadow I do not want the target date
changed, only the completion date recorded. Is that possible? The
only way for me to get the results I want now is to sever the link
when I complete a task, then check it off in both Datebk4 and Shadow.
But that kind of defeats the purpose of linking.

Thanks.

Lets see. I'll think it allowed:

Given a linked item from Shadow to Todo.

1) Check it off in Shadow (the finish date changes). The linked item will
not get the finish date, since the target date is used for linking. (If
the finish date went to ToDo, then the target date would be pretty
useless, and if it changed to using finish date oince completed, then the
todo woudl suddenly jump, which might confuse people. Ideas?) But even
thugh the linked item will not get the finish date, it will become
checked. Good.

2) Check it off in ToDo. If you do not have "record completion
date" checked, then the item will become checked, and its date will be
unchanged. Shadow will pick up the check. If you do have the pref
selected, then the target date will change when you check it off, and
Shadow will pick up the check, and the target date change.. as a target
date. Theres no way for Shadow to know if it should change the t-date or
the f-date. I coudl get smart, and say on import of chages to update the
f-date if the todo is checked.. but then people would say "hey, how come
the t-date didn't change like normal?". I could update both, perhaps.. so
update t-date as normal, and if checked, also update f-date to the
same. But maybe that woudl screw people up?

find things out.

I hate to ask.. but I won't give out email addresses, and don't
like to lift email verbatim .. I dont' wish to violate anyones
privacy.

They have asked for our help! They wish to personalize their
articles my illustrating some real world uses of Shadow Plan.. preferably
extreme or interesting ones, or ones where it has been used by a
larger company or the like. Anything adventurous or really neat, or lke
"wow, such and such was using it".

Please submit your stories or anythign you knwo about which fits
that sort of thing, so I can give it to Palmtop-Pro to use in their
story. I'm assuming that if they use your bit, you'll get a credit. I'll
have the article scanned and online as well.

Kindly do so - there more people around loving seeing there articles in

Just scanning the 'discuss' news group and came across this.
I had something similar happening with WordSmith. Yesterday finally tracked
it down.
I was running ClipHack on a Vx. It was interfering with the paste and multi
paste function. Disabling cured problem.
I haven't used cut & paste or multi paste much in Shadow & have not noticed
any thing awry!

Just a thought

Definitely seems like a bug; someone else has mentioned somethign
along these lines, and I've never been able to reproduce it. Does it
happen every time for you, or seemingly at random? Any pattern to it? Does
it only happen with these few files? (And if so, can you send me the
files, knowing I'll purge them after studying the crash?)

I woudl love to find this bug, but its difficult sionce I cannot
see it :/

Does it only happen if the clip is iin "one" or "many" mode?

The way I work, any task that is linked I would
generally mark as completed in ToDo, not Shadow. I
want the target date changed so the completed ToDo
stays on the date it was completed. I would like
Shadow to only mark the finish date and not update the
target date. Neither option below will do that for me
 :(
Would it be possible to have Shadow update the
Completion date instead of the target date for a ToDo
checked off in the ToDo list? It would seem not, since
that's how they are linked. From my perspective, I
don't need the link once a ToDo is completed.

When created from Shadow, it seems appropriate to use the target
date as the date of the todo item -- since the item is not finished yet,
you want to todo on the target date. There is the argument that you then
wish to move the todo to another time, and not effect the Shadow date, but
thats a whole other argument. So you've by definition linked Shadow's
target to the todo's date (and the todo only has one date, not 3 like a
shadow item). So when checking it off in todo, the built in todo app can
either upodate the date, or not. If it does, Shadows link updates the
target date in the shadow item .. since its the linked date.

I *could* make it so that once the link is created, all changes
effect the finish date, if the todo is checked. But that could get vary
complex on the user.. all this implicit magic woudl just seem like voodoo
until someoen read the manual, and I bet most people just stop using the
tool before resorting to the manual :)

	I dunno.

I'm open to change on this one, but I'm not sure what is right
(okay, normally I'm more opinionated, but 400 emails in 2 days has made my
todo list very long already :)

Thanks for the help everyone.

After removing two characters from my list names (a ? and a pipe (|))
everything worked great.

While we are on the subject of filename mangleling, I offer a modest
proposal to Jeff M.: Let's sacrifice one character at the end of the
file/list name for the category the list belongs to (A-P, or you
could use a bit pattern which would give you room for four "future
flags").

This would still keep the lists/files alphabetical but allow the same
list/file name in different categories. I think it would be a great
trade-off, because the average pilot user will be used to having
identical list/file names that reside in different categories.

That would be my vote! Maybe a preference item? Of
course, maybe most folks don't have the "record
completion date" in their ToDos AND want Shadow to
keep the original target date. If so, I guess I'll
have to simply break the link and check off the ToDo
in both apps. Not ideal but I realize a lot of
different folks use Shadow in a lot of different ways.

It sure is great to be able to have a dialog like this
with the developer, though. Thanks, Jeff, for
listening!!

Jumping in here...

My personal preference for To-Do linking & dates would be to have the
to-do set/created/linked with a Due Date equal to the Shadow item's
Target Date, but when the item is marked complete, either in Shadow
or To-Do, the Finished Date would be updated, but *not* the Target
Date. Otherwise, how would I know if I finished my taxes early? [
not that such a thing would ever happen... ;) ] Anyway, thanks for
all your hard work on the product Jeff. It's greatly appreciated!

Great. I'll have to put a limiter sok | is not used

I've reserved a character for a future category possibility. I've
always avoided using it, since it might confuse or worry people.. you
never know. Files are called "ShadP-" at the front. The - can be replaced
in the future..

What if you change the category of a file. Does its filename
change, then? Hotsyncing woudl end up creating a new file then, and not
syncing changes (which woudl confuse a user who just lost all the changes
he made to the old file on his desktop). Theres a lot of little
implications I'd have to address..

I agree. Its probably something I should have worried about
sooner, but when I originally built all this it was an acceptible
limit. Now it just annoys me :)

Thanks, and sorry for being lazy because it was probably in the
manual.

Just one little glitch: I had my list set up for numbering on levels
2 and 3. When I created a new item on level 2 with "New From", it
didn't pick up a number. When I called up the List Prefences dialog
and OK'ed it right away, a number did pop up for the new item.

I don't know if this if this is a bug, or it has something to do
with my system. When I attempt to add a link to a contact, each
time I hit the find button (the little magnifying glass in the
upper right hand corner of the link window), my unit freezes and I
have to do a soft reset. I am using a IIIC, OS3.5.2.

Question: why, when I set a link to the ToDo list - thus setting up a
new ToDo - does the ToDo appear as complete?

Thanks for your help. PDR

It doesn't freeze.. its just slow if you have a large number of
addresses. There will be a new version out in a few weeks with either a
faster find, or a scroll bar, or both, depending how much time I get to
improve it :)

> Question: why, when I set a link to the ToDo list - thus setting up a

It will only be linked and set as complete if your item is
complete in Shadow. ie: If an item is checked, and you link it, the linked
object will also be checked. If you don't have a checkbox column (custom
view, say), then try turning on the checkbox column to see if the item is
checked and the check hidden.

I had the same thing happening to me when I did a full restore a few
weeks back. The problem turned out to be the way that my conduit
(Desktop To Go) handles (or looses) the unique keys of the Palm's
database records.

If you're also using Desktop To Go, I suggest you get in touch with
DataViz. I also contacted them about this and was told that they'd
probably fix this issue, but not with a high priority. If more
customers complain, this might speeds things up a bit.

Jeff,

First things first. Great job!!!!
I am not sure the way you will enhance the conduit so Shadow can
fully replace the Todo app, at least for me. I am an Outlook 98 user
and I use to write my tasks in that application. I am using Desktop
ToGO as well too sync my Palm with Outlook. The way I would like
Shadow to work is the possibility to hotsync automatically all the
tasks directly to Shadow. I can see that this demands a whole new
desktop application to do so, where you can link a specific list with
a specific task category.
Another way to make the linking easier is to use the "New from"
option and the possibility to filter out the already linked tasks.

What do you think about this?

Its a good idea, but Shadow can't tell from the todos which are
linked; the link is from a shadow file item to a todo, so it woudl be easy
to tell todos that are linked from the current file (though a bit slow to
do), but it certainly couldn't tell which todos were linked to by other
files. Wish I could :)

I'm sure w'ell think of some good ways to make it easier to do
over the next while; if you have any cool ideas, let me know. I can see
that New From is very popular :)

I use MultiClipHack, and have not noticed any probs with cut and

I have not done extensive Shadow pasting, however..

Sometimes when I hotsync, I don't want to syncronize the Shadow files. When
I select "Custom" from the hotsync manager, the dialog box comes up and
allows me to set the action for the next hotsync for each of the conduits.
Only with the Shadow conduit, when I click the change button, nothing
happens - I can't set it to "do nothing". It's set to Syncronize the files
and I can't change it. Am I doing something wrong? PalmIIIc, OS3.5.2,
hotsync v3.1.0.

I used to use Dataviz but I am now using Pocket Mirror Pro, but I

You're doing nothing wrong; the Shadow Conduit 1.0c doesn't have
an options panel. The next conduit (the two way sync conduit) will have
many options..

I'd like to see a way to generate that TOC file automatically without
having to create each item, type in the linked file name, and create

Hmm. You can't do it now. I could make something to generate a
shadow list from your current listing, but I wouldn't want to make it
smart enough to add missing lists to it. Maybe a fun side-program :P

There are many, but they are not very good at it :)

Hit up www.babelfish.org, and you'll get a list of a dozen
translators. They butcher it nicely though :P

I'm putting a scan of the article in "Pen Computing" onto the
website, soon, too. (Check the Reviews page of ShadowPlan.. its getting
pretty extensive :)

Yeah they are definitely impressed. Notice they even had 1.5.0! Many more
accolades to come Mr Mitchell.

If you know anyone who can do a decent translation, let me
know. I'd like to put an englishized version on the website, and babelfish
is just so bad for this one :)

OK time to chime back in.

I really like what John was proposing. I think it makes sense to
update the finish date in Shadow if the ToDo item has been checked
off.

If the current behavior were the default (in order to minimize the
'voodoo' behavior unless 'voodoo' is chosen), and there was a
preference setting to have Shadow act this way I think it would
greatly enhance the value of the product as a to-do list replacement.

I want to keep the built-in todo database up to date because I use
DateBk4 with a split screen to organize my day.

Jeff - thanks for being open to suggestions!

OKay. So, what about the reverse? Changing the finish date in
Shadow.. what does that do?

	Currently:

	Always:
		Target date <-> Todo date

	The proposal is:

On import of changes (when a shadow list is opened):
		If todo checked:
update finish date instead of target date
		If todo unchecked:
			update target date

On export of changes (when a shadow list is saved):
		If todo checked (completed):
update todo's date to finish date
		If todo unchecked:
update todo's date to target date

Seems complex to me :P IS there any gotchas here?

> Jeff - thanks for being open to suggestions!

	Noproblem.

btw.. please cut off the extra stuff from below if its not useful
anymore :)

Jeff,

You are much better than me when it comes to
summarizing a request! It does souind pretty complex,
but what you have below is exactly what I (and I would
suspect Tori, also) would like. Would that tie in to
the native ToDo preference of "record completion date"
or be a Shadow preference? I suspect there are plenty
of Shadow users who do not want this behavior and
would like it to work as it does now. If what we are
requesting is doable it would be a great enhancement
for us, as long as others can keep it the way they
want.

Thanks.

I'll leave it to a vote. If you can get a number of folks to say
its great, I'll add a shadow pref and see how it goes. If I do it then,
I'll do it in a couple weeks.. I want to get a few fixes in for 1.5.0
bugs, and a couple new features (improved searching for address
linking, etc). Thus, I don't want to complicate things too much and risk
breaking anything :)

I think this feature would be incredibly useful...quite dynamic. Especially
if it was a "preference" and allowed others to not lose finctionality they
are used to having. Just really started using the new>from feature. Wow! Too
cool.
