Answer: D) Just over 1000
By the way, thank you and the others for the quick response to the
question about keyboard support. I'll remind you later about menu
support. Wordsmith did a great job of implementing this feature.
I'm starting to use ShadowPlan more and more. This is a great
program and you've done a terrific job of supporting it. A couple
additional comments/questions:
1. I'm currently using version 1.4.17 and haven't experienced any of
the delay problems using the links to addresses or memos with the
categories that others have related. I use Action Names as a
datebook/address replacement. However, I did notice that the link to
Action Names for the address book took me to the wrong spot like it
used to for to-do's. Wonder if it might be a similar bug.
2. How difficult would it be to incorporate a similar category
feature for linking to-dos where you could pick the category to link
to on an item basis rather than list? This would really be heaven
for me.
3. I know you're already planning on creating the ability to link
from one files item to an item in a different file. When this is
implemented, would you also be able to link the progress bar on an
item in one list to the progress bar of an item in a second list?
This would allow for a sort of master list of projects that is linked
to more detailed lists but could show the overall progress on those
projects automatically.
Keep up the good work. With improved keyboard support and the
desktop application, this is going to be one incredible app! (as if
it isn't already :)

Jeff,
Is there a way to change the default color that we use in our
outlines? I know that I can manually set each one but what I'd like
to do is to set a color, say blue, as the color that everything new
will be put in as. In the same vein, is there a way to change the
color of an existing list without changing each one individually?
thanks

Yeah, it'll get fixed for 1.5.0.

That'll be after 1.5.0; its a bit tricky, so I'd rathe not break
anything this close to release :)

This stuff is down the road (after better desktop support).. we
can fight about it then. Good idea though.. it makes sense.

Interesting; thereisnt' a current way to change the colour of
everything, without using Hilights (though thats not what you want to do
for this). You just prefer a different item colour?
I was thinking of eventually adding a default "foreground" and
"background" colour and the like, but never got to it.
Does anyoen else need this?

I use color coding quite frequently and consistently in DateBk4 to
reflect the different types of appointments/todos I have. It gives me
a great "at a glance" overview of a day, week or month. It would be
nice if I could get Shadow's color scheme to match the one I already
use in DateBk4. It's no show stopper for me though.
So if this can be done with little impact to your schedule and
Shadow's footprint, then yes, it would be really nice to have. If it
takes significant resources, then I'd place it lower on my priority
list if I were you.
Roy.

I have asked for this in the past. What I really think would be
easiest is (if you have a color palm available) for you to load up
Khroma, and make sure that Shadow Plan honours the settings in Khroma
(it currently doesn't). Once you have that, people can configure the
basic colors of Shadow Plan just like all their other apps (and for
free too).
After that point, allowing specific colors in Shadow Plan would
follow later.

Actually, I've been using Chrome (I don't know what Khroma is) ever
since my I got my IIIc (now Prism) and Shadow does honor Chrome a
little -- if you don't use the Col-bg option in Shadow you will get
the background that you've chosen for your Chrome scheme. I have a
very dark background in my Chrome scheme and would like to be able to
make my text a light color for better visibility. Also, I would like
to be able to change the whole outline at once because I often change
the color scheme (it's just a quick tap or two) depending on what the
lighting is like where I'm working. That's why I was asking about
this option.

I will have to look up the info for Khroma; I'm so far playing it
pretty safe, in the name of compatability. Doing a lot of colour tricks
with other apps can make it difficult to be compatible on all machines, so
so far I've erred in favour of safety. Colour is very good in Shadow.. but
I agree.. I could do so much more :)

OKay, heres a plan -- can you guys bring it up again in two weeks
or so, once I've had 1.5.0 out the door, and a little break out of the
way.. and then we can start thinking about colour again. I have a Prism as
well, so colour is my interests too ;)

You can already set the colour of individual items. (Go to item
details, and look in the bottom right for a solid black box. Hit that to
get a colour picker). We're talking about mroe global defaults.. like
setting the default background colour, text colour, etc. You can also do
hilights right now.. take a look under the List menu, and hit
Hilight.. great fun :)

Ahh, sorry -- I mistyped the address to shadow-discuss
webforum. It is just a prc, and no documents or the like provided. Its
really a very solid alpha.
I want to know how fast it seems for people, in the new from and
link manager add sections. Categorie slow it down, but I want to kow if
speed is acceptible for most people, and if it works right.

How do you move up and down the list with the keyboard? I have been
able to "page up/down" but haven't figured out how to simply move
from item to item down a list. This looks like a fantastic app-- but
I'm 99% sure I'd use my PPK to enter the bulk of the info I put into
it, and I'm picking up my stylus every time I want to move to another
item I've already entered.
Thanks in advance!

Nope. When I enter several lines into an outline, and want to return
to a previous line, I can't get the arrow keys on the PPK to move the
selected line.
Hmmm... maybe I'd better try playing with hacks and drivers to see if
there isn't a conflict somewhere along the line. It seemed like
something so very basic that it *must* already be included... that's
why I decided to ask here. For the record, I'm using OS 3.3, Palm
IIIx, several hacks installed. Oh yeah, and Palm keyboard driver
v1.2. I'll let you know what I find.
Thanks for the quick reply!

With no hacks running, I still can't get the arrow keys to work. I
uninstalled all hacks, did a soft reset, and it still doesn't work.
I can move an individual item around using Tab/Shift
Tab/space/backspace... but I can't simply move from one item to
another using arrow keys. In fact, the arrow keys on my Palm
keyboard do absolutely nothing with this program.
Any ideas?

The cursor keys allow you to move the selection up and down, and
collapse/expand items. But only if your'e using a beta greater than
1.4.0. If you're on 1.4.0, just wait until tomorrow or Tuesday when I
release 1.5.0..

You were right... I noticed right after I posted my last message that
there was an earlier message in the list referring to the "latest
beta version." On a hunch, I installed it and VOILA! it works. Even
with 8 hacks, QuickBits and TornadoV installed, the arrow keys work
just fine. What an awesome program. Looks like I'll be registering
this one. :)
And thanks for the help Tamim. If you hadn't let me know that
support for arrow keys was now included, I probably wouldn't have
kept exploring and tried the beta.

No problem, you're very welcome! Glad it worked out for you.
Actually, I found out the cursor keys work in Shadow by accident! If
you're a keyboard user, I would also like to HIGHLY recommend
LaptopHack from Paul Nevai and PointerHack (free). Both of these
hacks add so much keyboard functionality that you'll barely need to
touch your stylus again. You can find both hacks on Palmgear.com.

Subject: using Shadow for to dos
|

I registered Shadow today, and want to use it to keep a "master list"
of projects and todos. I'd like to be able to selectively put *some*
Shadow items into my to do app (and in Datebk4), and it looks like
Shadow's linking is just the ticket. I think this system would work
out a bit better if I could quickly and easily determine which of the
items on my Shadow list have been linked to these apps. Would it be
possible to add a filter and/or highlight menu item so that linked
items could be chosen for those purposes?
One other thought... any chance that an item marked as a "done"
appointment (not todo) in Datebk4 could then be marked as done in
Shadow? And one more, while I'm generating work for Jeff... would it
be possible to specify a default category for either To Do or Datebk4
links?
Thanks in advance. This is an awesome program as is-- hope these
feature requests don't sound too demanding coming from a newbie. :)

I will be (eventually) adding a customizable filter screen, so you
can whatever you like. For now, turning on the link arrow column will
quickly let you see if anitem has any links from it, and turning on the
todo-link column gives you a quick way to see, disable, enable todo links.

A shadow item linked to todo or datebook will become checked if
you check the corresponding item in the todo/datebook,a nd vice
versa. Thats what the link is for ;)
> be possible to specify a default category for either To Do or Datebk4

1.5.0 allows you to set a default todo link category; the datebook
doesn't have categories (though datebk4 allows them. I'll support that
later)

The *to do* items in Datebk4 that are marked complete do show up as
complete in Shadow... but *appointments*? (marking appts. as "done"
is another feature of Datebk4 that isn't in the original Datebook
app.) When I mark an appointment in Datebk4 as "done", either by
checking the appropriate box in the Datebk4 appt. details box or by
swiping left to right through the time of the appointment, it doesn't
seem to do anything to the linked Shadow item. Am I doing something
wrong? Wouldn't be the first time. :)

Ahh; Currently, Shadow works very well with the todo and datebook
databases, but I don't do much in the way of other-peoples-extensions,
since they're nonstandard and only useful to groups of people. ie: A lot
of users are DateBk4, DateBk3, DateBookPlus, Action Names, and other app
users, though DB4 and AN definitely have the majority. So once things are
more or less "done" in Shadow, I'll add more specifics for DB4.. but it
seems to me to do things foreveryone first, and then go into working on
little things later. But we'll see.. (I like DB4 icons :)

I think that someone else mentioned this, but category color support would be
cool. Or you could have it in the list options like you already do for the
different numbering conventions. i.e. Parent Blue, Child Green, Grandchildren
:) Teal, Great-Grandchildren.... you get the idea.
BTW, I really like what you have done with the exporting function. This
program continues to amaze me, and I look forward to your effort on the

You can already set the colour of individual items. (Go to item
details, and look in the bottom right for a solid black box. Hit that to
get a colour picker). We're talking about mroe global defaults.. like
setting the default background colour, text colour, etc. You can also do
hilights right now.. take a look under the List menu, and hit
Hilight.. great fun :)

In Link Manager, you add a link, and then on the link list in
shadow, it shows the wrong address? OR do you mean after you do a goto to
Action Names it goes to the wrong one?

I mean the former -- the wrong name shows up on the link list. As I

An interesting point. I will have to add some key navigation to
the front screen soon. Can you remind me in a week or two when things have
settled down?

May I make a pitch for a couple more tweaks to the keyboard support?
I'd like to have one item of an outine selected when I open it (top
line maybe?). As is, when I use my keyboard, I have to tap on "open"
and then tap on a line to "wake up" use of the arrow keys.
I've also found that if I have more than one screen of info in an
outline and the last item has >1 line, scrolling to the bottom does
not reveal the whole item-- only the top line. Does the same using
the menu "next item" command.
I've also found that when I use arrow keys to scroll back up to the
top the whole outline suddenly disappears when I get to the top. The
screen gets redrawn if I use "page down."
I'd bet this is a deliberate choice, but would it be possible to at
least allow users the option to not have the details screen opened up
by default when one types a new item in an outline? I'd love to just
be able to see the item as it appears on the outline while I'm typing
it... maybe then a simple down arrow or "done" would allow one to
move to another point in the outline. I realize that some probably
always set dates or numbering when entering items, but I rarely do.
Finally, I'd like to see a way (aside from LapTopHack and/or
PointerHack) to select and open an outline from the list of all
outlines.
Despite the fact that I've developed the fine art of finding such
things (making work for developers), I love this program. It has
already become the center of my schedule planning-- I've mapped a
hardware button to it (high praise indeed from a long-time Palm
user). I'm not offended if you ignore my suggestions-- it is your
baby and you've done an incredible job so far. :)

Anyone else agree? To alway select the screens topmost item after
a load?

Your right. A few people have mentioned this. I will make it try
and reveal more of the information.

Does this only happen with the keyboard scroll up, then?

I'll be adding this sort of thing "eventually"; It was a choice I
made up front, so that I could capture more data about an item right from
the onset. I always assumed people would enter less often than they would
read the data (bad assumption!), so the capture dialog made sense.
Changing it now is lots of work,s ince it changes the UI -- tapping on an
item.. shoudl it select it, or put a cursor in it? I am planning on making
this a pref in the future.. since it suits two different sets of people
very well -- task managers will likely want the details behaviour as it is
now, and journalists or meeting note stakers amy likely want to just skip
the details screen and type away..

No no, from day one I've encouraged suggestions. I don't make the
program for me alone, so why shoudl I ony listen to my thoughts? It is
built by request for everyone. This is my personal opinion as a user and a
developer, and I cannot understand why more developers don't do the same..

No, I just got it to repeatedly happen with the "previous item" menu
command. Happens if I have several screens of data, and I move down
the outline so that I'm one screen away from the top of the outline
(that is, the top lines are not visible). I then select the top item
showing on the screen, and tap "previous item" or up arrow from the
keyboard. My screen goes blank. Only appears to happen when you are
one screenful away from the top.

I'd love to be able to start the program, see my list of outlines,
use the arrow keys to move up and down that list and press "return"
to open the one I want (a la SmartDoc). I currently have to both tap
on my selection with the stylus and then tap on "open."

I wish more developers did. :) People tend to gravitate to those
who listen... like Steuart Dewar (Datebk4) and Paul Nevai (LapTopHack
and pEdit). With any luck, the market will reward you guys. I just
don't want to come across as believing that my vision is the correct
one or most popular, because I'm certain that there are differences.
In fact I think one of the strongest features of Shadow is the
ability of the end user to customize it to different needs. I *love*
options!

Strange; so essentially, go to top of list, hit page down button,
hit the up arrow and woof? Weird.

I have a simple philosophy; if someone makes a suggestion I like,
and it doesn't contradict existing stuff, I put it in. If people disagree
with wat I think, and they vote me out, I do it. Since no one has made
some of these suggestions, or the ones that've been made before and I've
not put in yet.. well, they simply have to go in :)

heh. The trick is keeping them reasonably organize.d I think
Shadow is one of the most customizable apps ever. But its still (hopefully
;) pretty easy for people to use.. just close your eyes an dhit "OK" ;)

1.4.9 is way old. 1.4.20 is pretty current. (20 is bigger than
9). 1.5.0 will be out in a couple of hours, so get it then :)

I've just had no time to polish 1.4.20 any more, so I've been
stalling. Rather than stall any longer, I'm letting 1.5.0 out soon, and
will do some 1.5.x releases to fix anythign that comes up..

Subject: Shadow Plan 1.5.0 Released!
|

I like to do this through announce, but I keep finding lots of people in
shadow-discuss but not in shadow-test.. so my apologies for the spam.
There are now two editions of Shadow Plan -- a version for everyone
(Windows, Mac, Unix, you name it), and a version enhanced for Windows
users.
Generic Edition:
http://www.codejedi.com/shadowplan/binaries/shadow150gen.zip
Windows Enhanced Edition:
http://www.codejedi.com/shadowplan/binaries/shadow150win.zip
This release features improvements all over the place, to make your time
in Shadow Plan more valuable and productive. Get it while its hot :)
An extract from the WhatsNew follows.
jeff
Shadow Plan 1.5.0
-----------------
Lots happening in this lastest release of Shadow Plan! Be sure to keep a
watchful eye on your download sites or my website, as I'm hoping to
release some Windows tools soon to translate your Shadow Plan files into
RTF, HTML, and other useful formats!
Shadow Plan 1.5.0 is another huge stride forward for Palm outliners and
task managers. You can now link to the Address Book and MemoPad in
addition to the ToDo and Datebook as before. You can archive old items as
you delete them, if you like. Many facets of the application have been
tuned to make your life easier -- Palm global Find is supported, exports
have been improved, group management is easier. For Windows users, a first
step towards desktop support is included in the Windows Enhanced Edition
-- a one way backup conduit that writes its files in the industry standard
XML format. Keep your eyes open for tools to translate the XML into RTF,
HTML, and other useful formats making sharing and printing your data very
easy!
NEW! Windows backup conduit!
NEW! Killer linking! Link to address book and memopad, and expand and
collapse address and memo links underneath an item right onscreen! Now
you can appoint people to tasks, easily illustrate who attended a
meeting or easily identify locations of tasks (or anything else you can
think of doing!) Set a program to use for jumping to these links. Have
as
many links on an item as you like!
NEW! Global Find now supported! (Searching through all your Shadow files
at once now works, and all those nifty hacks that work with Find will be
happy!)
NEW! Make new items from existing todo and datebook items! Easily allows
you to create items on your desktop or from other applications, and then
bring them in as linked (or unlinked) Shadow task items!
NEW! More list-specific options -- autolink all new items to todo, and set
todo linking category, among other things!
NEW! Archive your items as you delete them! If you don't wish to forget
an item forever, just archive it! They will show up in a list called
__ARCHIVE__ in Unfiled. You can edit this list to your desires, too!
NEW! Automaticlly saves your changes if you exit Shadow within Details
type windows.
NEW! Drag and drop should help you more with its visual hints!
NEW! Export to DOC! (and soon Import from DOC, too!). Use any of the
normal exporting formats, too. This should let you communicate
effectively
with palm word processors, and allows you to get your data to the
desktop that much easier!
NEW! Can now "goto" links in Action Names! (AN used to go to wrong one,
due to the way it works)
NEW! Better keyboard and button support -- some new and also more sensible
shortcuts, more hardware scroll button support, etc. Arrows will move
the selection point up and down, or collapse/expand items
NEW! Open database and XML formats! Your file operations can be a little
faster (after a few uses) in this version; in the future they will be
much faster. Further, other developers are welcome to link to and work
with Shadow Plan files. Maybe more wonderful tools will pop up from
others?
NEW! General bugfixes; no more looping display on long lists; demotion and
promotion now move the item to smarter more useful locations in the
sublevels and much much more!
I've probably forgotten things, too :)

Looks like 1.5.0 is so far a pretty good and solid release.
I think 1.5.0 may have found a compiler bug. The Address linking
works well in All on all tested machines, but I think on some machines the
non-All may just find no matches and show an empty list (thats the
compiler bug -- very odd.) One of these days I'll send my list of issues
to CodeWarrior :/
So if you have this issue.. just use All for now for Addresses
:) Anyway, so be it -- I'm taking a few days vacation. I'm burnt out
bad :P
Overall, I think 1.5.0 is a pretty good and solid release. Theres
a few snags, but I just couldn't commit an extra 30hour a week to it for
the last couple weeks.. such is life. I'll put out a 1.5.5 soon, with some
more keyboard support, some fixes for whatever folks find in 1.5.0, and
such. Gotta keep everyone on their toes :)

I'll have to check the manual, but here are the rules: If you
check a child off, and the whole sublevel becomes complete, the parent is
also checked (which can cause its parent to be checked, and so on, as
levels complete). If you have two items in a sublevel, and check one of
them, the parent wont' check.. its only on completing a level this
happens.
There is a list option in Shadow Plan 1.5.0 to allow you to turn
off some of these automatic behaviours. If you activate that option
("Suppress autocheck"), then you can check and uncheck things to your
hearts content..
Sorry, I'm in a super rush right now :)

Version 1.5 is awesome. The address book links is a lifesaver and it
works great. As for Handspring, if you need letters from users to go
