On local radio and websites, the message is being passed that when polled the people don't mind being tolled. (I'm so clever with my rhymes.) Naturally I assume no citizenry were actually asked ;)
Let me put this into perspectice..
- We pay taxes for both maintenance of the existing roadways and expansion to new routes
- Toronto has notoriously badly maintained roads as-is (compare to Mississauga with our old General of a mayor :)
- With traffic being so terribly bad, Toronto has been spending some time (10+ years?) trying to build proposals.. and nothing. Sure, they came up with some weaksauce this last summer, but pretty much everyone thinks if enacted the city would be shut down for a decade of turmoil
So, what is really being asked here is -- given the lackluster history of the existing money being spent, whethor we would fork over _more_ money (even from people commuting in from other towns) and trust city planners to actually do something useful with it.
Myself, I ask these questions..
- Do we trust that given a pile more income, would they actually do anything besides hire a pile of new parking ticket cops? That seems to be where any new money goes to _now_..
- We can assume that any new toll system will stay in place forever; they're asking if we would welcome a new permanent driving tax for the short term goal of easing traffic congestion
So, anyone who is asked.. please let them know -- no, we do not want to give you more money, and no we do not trust you with that money. Toronto has been making a mess for a long time.. how about they put something foreward that earns some trust in this matter, first, before asking for more?
