R.I.P. Retro Gamer Magazine UK
Tue, 27 Sep 2005

(Updated) Retro Gamer (RG) was a great magazine published in the UK for a year or two. With heavy heart I say this in the past tense for it would seem that Live Publishing is no more. Apparently RG-itself was doing pretty well but the other magazines Live was publishing didn't fare so well and dragged the company down. Quite a shame, as RG stood as one of the few retro-oriented magazines. At least some of the writers (who got stiffed!) are pooling together unpublished articles to print up a CD of the now missing issue 19 - check it out here. Also see this new retro magazine rising from the ashes, here

Retro Gamer was slanted towards the UK (like ST-Format and such before it), and that lent it some charm.. I got to learn more about the Acorn, Amstrad and Spectrum platforms that were never sold in any volume here in North America. Really, it was a class publication with issue binders, cover CDs with old ROMs and games (a great way to collect up legal ROM licenses!), and goofy T-shirts on cute English models.

It would've been nice if they'd refused to take my recent renewal instead of my paying one years rate for a single issue, but I'll go after my CC company to see if they get claw back some money. I just now noticed this big old mess, as its been some 3 months since I ordered and I was wondering where the latest issue and Space Invaders "Die Human!" tee-shirt were.. upon checking the website I found the forum closed (where it was very popular before.)

Well, RIP Retro Gamer.. you'll be missed. I'll have to resort to the web for Spectrum news now :(
